Chapter 4 - THE SHOPPING SPREE

While Daniel sweated in his glass office trying to reassure Jessica that everything was under control, Claire was standing in the VIP penthouse suite of Nashville's most exclusive luxury boutique, surrounded by racks of haute couture gowns flown in directly from Milan and Paris.
She wasn't alone. Standing beside her with an iPad was a senior fashion consultant, while her father sat comfortably in a velvet armchair, sipping espresso and smiling warmly at his daughter.
"How does this one feel, my dear?" George asked, gesturing toward a breathtaking floor-length midnight-blue silk gown embroidered with delicate silver constellations that caught the light like starlight.
Claire stepped out from the fitting room, catching her reflection in the full-length gilded mirror. The sleek, flawless silhouette hugged her athletic figure perfectly, exuding an aura of effortless, commanding elegance that bore zero resemblance to the exhausted stay-at-home mother who had worn blue frosting like a crown of thorns just days ago.
"It’s perfect, Dad," Claire said softly, turning slowly to watch the silver threads shimmer under the recessed spotlights. "It feels like... freedom."
"It fits a Bradford," George said with a proud grin, standing up and pulling out his titanium black card to settle the bill without even glancing at the six-figure total. "Now, what about jewelry? We can’t have my daughter walking into the grand ballroom looking underequipped."
Claire touched her wrist, feeling the familiar, grounding weight of her mother’s silver compass bracelet. "I have my own jewelry, Dad. Just one addition."
From her handbag, she pulled out a magnificent diamond-encrusted pendant necklace—a family heirloom her father had gifted her years ago but which she had kept locked away in a safety deposit box during her marriage to Daniel. The brilliant-cut diamonds caught the light like frozen fire.
"There’s my girl," George murmured, his eyes shining with unshed tears. "For six years, you let that pathetic little man make you feel small. Next week, at that gala, you are going to show him what real power looks like."
"I don't want to destroy him publicly right away," Claire said, her voice eerily calm as she unzipped the gown and changed back into her comfortable travel clothes. "I want him to squirm. I want him to walk into that ballroom thinking he’s networking with billionaires, trying to kiss up to the very people who hold his leash. I want him to look for his social-climbing mistress's approval while realizing he’s completely out of his depth."
"And the financial sabotage?" George asked, raising an eyebrow.
"My legal team in Nashville filed formal injunctions this morning," Claire replied smoothly, sliding her phone back into her pocket. "Every single forged document, every unauthorized loan application, and every attempt to drain my accounts has been cataloged and handed over to federal prosecutors and corporate fraud investigators. By the time the gala ends next Friday, Daniel Mercer won't just be bankrupt—he’ll be facing criminal indictments for fraud and identity theft."
George let out a deep, booming laugh that echoed off the marble walls of the penthouse suite. "God, I love how your mind works. You’re your grandfather’s granddaughter through and through."
As they stepped out onto the private balcony overlooking the glittering Nashville skyline, Claire took a deep breath of the autumn air. The city lights twinkled like distant stars. Down there, somewhere in the suburbs, Daniel and Jessica were likely patting themselves on the back, believing they had won.

They had ten days left of their illusion.
And then, reality would strike like lightning.
