Chapter 6 - THE RED CARPET

The grand ballroom of the Nashville Grand Hotel glittered under twenty thousand crystal chandeliers on Friday evening.

It was the social event of the decade. Valet parking attendants rushed to park custom Rolls-Royces, Bentleys, and exotic sports cars as Nashville's elite—politicians, real estate moguls, banking executives, and corporate titans—stepped out onto the crimson red carpet flanked by flashing paparazzi cameras and national media crews.

Daniel Mercer stepped out of his leased luxury sedan, adjusting his velvet tuxedo jacket with practiced confidence. On his arm walked Jessica, wearing a daring, sequined crimson gown that practically screamed for attention, her newly acquired diamond tennis bracelet sparkling under the flashbulbs.

"Look at all these cameras, Daniel," Jessica whispered excitedly, leaning against his shoulder. "We look incredible."

"Just stay close and follow my lead," Daniel muttered, scanning the crowd. His palms were slick with sweat despite the cool autumn air.

As they walked up the grand marble steps and entered the cavernous foyer, the sheer scale of the event took Daniel’s breath away. Regional executives from competing firms, board members of Fortune 500 companies, and state legislators mingled beneath towering floral arrangements.

"Mr. Mercer! Good to see you made it," a voice boomed behind them.

Daniel turned to see Arthur Vance striding over, flanked by his senior vice presidents. Vance looked impeccably sharp, but his eyes were darting nervously around the room.

"Wouldn't miss it, Art," Daniel replied, forcing a confident smile. "We're honored to represent Apex."

"Keep your voice down," Vance hissed, stepping closer. "Word on the floor is that the principal heir of Bradford Holdings has finally arrived, along with patriarch George Bradford himself. They're up in the private VIP mezzanine overlooking the ballroom. If we get a chance to bow and pay our respects tonight, do not blow it."

Daniel swallowed hard. "Understood."

As Vance moved away to mingle with banking executives, Daniel guided Jessica toward the main ballroom entrance. "Come on, let's grab a glass of champagne. I need a drink."

Just as they reached the arched entryway, the overhead PA system chimed softly, drawing the attention of all three hundred guests in the grand hall.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” the honeyed voice of the master of ceremonies echoed through the speakers. “Please direct your attention to the grand staircase and the VIP mezzanine.”

The murmurs in the ballroom died down instantly. All heads turned toward the sweeping double staircase draped in white roses and ivy.

At the top of the stairs, standing in the golden glow of the chandelier spotlight, was George Bradford. The formidable industrial titan stood tall and proud, wearing a classic black tuxedo, radiating absolute, unshakeable authority.

And walking right beside him—stepping down the stairs with the poise of a queen, draped in a breathtaking midnight-blue silk gown embroidered with shimmering silver constellations, her dark hair cascading in glossy waves over her shoulders—was Claire.

At her neck sparkled a magnificent diamond pendant. On her wrist, catching the light with every graceful movement, was a silver bracelet with a tiny, spinning compass.

Daniel froze mid-step.

His glass of champagne slipped from his fingers, shattering against the marble floor with a sharp, echoing crash.

Around him, conversations abruptly halted. Dozens of heads snapped from the staircase to Daniel, and then back to the stunning woman descending arm-in-arm with the most powerful billionaire in the Southeast.
