Chapter 26 - THE SHADOWS OF THE PAST

Back in Atlanta, the federal holding facility was quiet, save for the distant metallic clatter of meal carts and the harsh buzz of fluorescent tubes overhead. Daniel Mercer sat on the edge of a thin, stiff mattress, his head resting in his hands. His expensive suit was now wrinkled beyond recognition, smelling of stale sweat and despair.
The heavy steel door of his cell unlocked with a loud *clack*. A prison guard stepped aside, and a tall, slender woman in a dark trench coat walked into the small room. Her hair was partially hidden beneath a wide-brimmed hat, and dark sunglasses obscured her eyes despite the dim lighting.
Daniel looked up, his heart leaping with a pathetic, desperate spark of hope. "Chloe?" he croaked, scrambling to his feet. "Chloe, you came! Thank God! You have to help me—get me out of here, call my contacts, tell them it’s all a misunderstanding—"
The woman stopped a few feet away. Slowly, deliberately, she reached up and removed her sunglasses.
It wasn't Chloe.
It was Elena Mercer—Daniel’s mother. The woman who had stood beside him at Leo’s birthday party, laughing as her son pushed Claire’s face into the cake; the woman who had sneered at Claire as a penniless nobody.
Elena looked older, her face haggard, her designer handbag clutched in white-knuckled desperation against her chest. The arrogant, untouchable matriarch of the Mercer family was completely gone, replaced by a frightened, exhausted old woman.
"Mother?" Daniel stared, blinking in disbelief. "What... what are you doing here? Where is your lawyer? Why didn't you stop them?"
Elena let out a harsh, bitter laugh that sounded like dry leaves scraping across pavement. "Stop them, Daniel? Stop *who*? Do you have any idea what you’ve done?"
"I didn't do anything!" Daniel protested, his voice rising in panic. "It’s a corporate dispute! Claire’s family—some crazy billionaire syndicate—they’re framing me!"
"You fool," Elena hissed, stepping forward and striking him across the face with an open palm. The sharp *slap* echoed off the concrete walls. "You absolute, arrogant fool. I spent twenty years building our social standing in this city, making connections, securing our future, and you threw it all away because you couldn't keep your hands off a cheap secretary and your ego in check."
Daniel touched his stinging cheek, staring at his mother in utter shock. "You’re blaming me? You laughed at her too! You told me she was trash!"
"She wasn't trash, Daniel," Elena whispered, her voice dropping to a trembling, terrified rasp. "I found out this morning. Before the federal marshals seized my accounts and locked my estates. The lawyers handling the Bradford liquidation... they showed me the family registry."
Elena grabbed the lapel of Daniel’s rumpled suit, her fingers clawing into the fabric. "Jonathan Bradford wasn't just a businessman, Daniel. He was the primary angel investor behind half the venture capital firms in the Southeast. And Claire... Claire wasn't his adopted charity case. She was his only surviving biological child. The sole heir to a global fortune that makes our entire net worth look like pocket change."
Daniel staggered backward, his legs hitting the edge of the mattress. He sat down hard, the breath completely knocked out of his lungs.
"The birthday cake," Daniel whispered, the memory rushing back with horrifying clarity. "The video... she recorded it..."
"No," Elena corrected grimly, letting go of his jacket and stepping back toward the door. "She didn't have to record anything. The universe recorded it for her. And now, we are going to pay for every single crumb."

The heavy steel door slammed shut behind her, the lock clicking into place with the finality of a guillotine blade dropping in the town square.
