Chapter 23 - THE INTERROGATION ROOM CHILL

The interrogation room at the federal precinct in downtown Atlanta smelled of stale coffee, old paper, and institutional floor wax. The overhead fluorescent light hummed a high-pitched, agonizing tune, casting harsh shadows across the metal table where Daniel Mercer sat in handcuffs. His expensive tailored suit was rumpled, his collar unbuttoned, and dark circles bruised the skin beneath his bloodshot eyes.

The heavy steel door swung open. Two men in dark, perfectly pressed federal suits walked in. They didn't wear badges on their lapels; instead, they carried thick leather portfolios that looked suspiciously like they belonged to private high-stakes attorneys rather than government investigators.

The lead agent, a tall, middle-aged man with sharp graying temples and piercing blue eyes named Agent Vance (no relation to Marcus), placed a single manila folder on the table and sat down. He didn't introduce himself. He just stared at Daniel with a look of profound, clinical indifference.

"Mr. Mercer," Agent Vance began, his voice deep and measured. "Let’s skip the pleasantries. You are facing twenty-four counts of wire fraud, interstate transport of stolen corporate property, systemic tax evasion, and conspiracy to commit securities fraud."

Daniel swallowed hard, trying to summon a fraction of his old arrogance. "This is a mistake! A witch hunt! I want to speak to my lawyer—my legal team should have been here—"

"Your legal team resigned twenty minutes ago," Agent Vance interrupted smoothly, sliding a document across the table. "They received a comprehensive data package from an international audit firm based in Zurich. They took one look at the liability exposure, realized they wouldn't be paid, and terminated your retainer."

Daniel stared at the paper. The letterhead belonged to *Bradford Philanthropy & Holdings LLC*. The name hit him like a physical blow to the stomach.

"Bradford..." Daniel breathed, his voice trembling. "That’s... that’s impossible. That’s a multi-trillion-dollar sovereign-tier entity. They don't care about a regional logistics firm in Georgia! It’s a coincidence!"

Agent Vance leaned forward, resting his forearms on the metal table. "Nothing involving you is a coincidence anymore, Daniel. You spent the last seven years embezzling minor operational funds from subsidiary accounts to fund your personal lifestyle and your mistresses. You thought nobody was paying attention because your wife handled the household quietly while you played king of the hill."

"My wife..." Daniel muttered, the terrible, suffocating truth finally beginning to dawn on him. "Claire... Claire Bradford?"

"Her legal surname has always been Bradford," Agent Vance corrected quietly. "Her father was Jonathan Bradford—the man who quietly built the largest privately held energy and shipping empire in the Western Hemisphere before his passing. Claire chose to live a normal life, to marry for love, to experience humanity without the crushing weight of her family’s legacy. And how did you repay that gift of humility, Daniel?"

Daniel opened his mouth, but no words came out. His tongue felt like dry sandpaper. The memory of the birthday party flashed through his mind—the cake, the humiliating shove, Chloe’s giggling camera flash, and Claire’s quiet, devastating departure.

"You didn't just insult a wife," Agent Vance said, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "You declared war on a sovereign financial power that can rewrite the economic landscape of three continents before breakfast. And the audit we just completed? That was just the preliminary greeting."

The door opened behind Agent Vance. A prison guard stepped in, grabbing Daniel by the shoulder to haul him back to his holding cell. As Daniel was dragged away, his legs shaking beneath him, he realized he wasn't just losing his company, his money, and his freedom. He had lost everything.
