Chapter 8 - THE TRAP CLOSES

The weight of three hundred staring eyes felt like a physical blow against Daniel’s chest. His legs felt like lead, but social instinct and sheer terror forced him forward. He stumbled half a step out from the shadow of the pillar, his face drained of all color.
Beside him, Jessica hissed through clenched teeth, "Daniel, what is this?! Who is that old man?! What is he talking about?!"
"Shut up," Daniel whispered hoarsely, his hands trembling so violently he had to clasp them together behind his back to hide the shaking.
Claire stepped forward from beside her father, walking toward the edge of the dais. The diamond pendant at her neck shimmered under the spotlights. When she looked down at Daniel, there was no anger in her eyes—only a profound, pitying coldness that cut deeper than any scream.
"Hello, Daniel," Claire’s voice flowed softly through the microphone, crystal clear and steady. "Did you enjoy your weekend in Atlanta? Did you like the penthouse you tried to buy with my forged signature?"
A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom. Regional VP Arthur Vance, standing nearby, clutched his chest as if he’d been struck.
"Forged signature?" Vance muttered aloud. "What the hell is she talking about?!"
Claire raised her left wrist, letting the silver compass bracelet catch the light. "For six years, Daniel, you believed I was a charity case. You believed my father was just an old farmer growing apples. You took my investments, you raided my savings, you forged my financial authorizations, and you brought your mistress into our home while treating my son like an afterthought."
Claire paused, letting her words sink into every corner of the silent hall.
"You wanted to remind me of my place, Daniel. So allow me to return the favor."
At that exact moment, the massive LED screens mounted on either side of the stage flickered to life. Instead of corporate logos, the high-definition display projected clean, undeniable digital records: bank transfer logs, forged signature authorizations stamped with Apex Luxury Motors letterhead, audio transcripts of loan applications, and text messages between Daniel and Jessica plotting the financial takeover of Claire’s assets.
The entire room stared in stunned horror at the giant screens broadcasting Daniel’s crimes in 4K resolution.
"No... no, that's fake! That's a setup!" Daniel screamed, lunging forward in blind panic, his voice cracking with hysteria. "She's lying! It's a conspiracy!"

Before Daniel could take another step, two tall, broad-shouldered men in tailored dark suits stepped out from the wings of the stage. Federal marshals and corporate security officers.
"Daniel Mercer," the lead officer spoke calmly, flashing a gold badge before snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto Daniel’s wrists with a sharp click. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, identity theft, and forgery across state lines. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
