Chapter 12 - THE RESTITUTION HEARINGS

Six months after Hope’s birth, the final bankruptcy and corporate restructuring hearings for Bennett Development Corporation were held in Federal District Court.
Because Ryan had been forced to surrender his equity to settle the embezzlement charges, the board of directors needed a new majority trustee to oversee the remaining assets and manage the children's trust funds.
The courtroom doors opened, and I walked in.
I wore a sharp ivory suit, my hair pulled back into an elegant knot. I walked with confidence, accompanied by Marcus Sterling and Victoria.
Ryan, sitting in orange prison scrubs while awaiting his final sentencing transfer, looked up in disbelief as I took my seat at the restructuring table.
Arthur Vance, representing the board, stood up and addressed the judge.
"Your Honor, following the removal of Ryan Bennett, the board of directors has voted unanimously to appoint Claire Bennett as Chief Trustee of the Bennett Family Estate and Advisory Board Member of Bennett Development Corporation."
Ryan jumped up from his chair, his handcuffs rattling. "Objection! She can't be trustee! She isn't a shareholder!"
"Silence, defendant!" the federal judge warned, slamming his gavel.
Arthur turned to look at Ryan with total disdain. "Mrs. Bennett holds a Juris Doctor from Columbia Law, specialized in corporate estate management, and successfully recovered $9.4 million in stolen corporate capital. She is more qualified to run this estate than you ever were."
The judge looked at the documentation signed by ninety percent of the shareholders.
"The court approves the appointment," the judge declared. "Mrs. Claire Bennett is hereby granted full authority over the Bennett family trusts, estate properties, and corporate voting rights."

Ryan slumped back into his chair, completely crushed.
I looked back at him one last time. There was no anger left in my heart—only profound pity for a man who had sacrificed everything real for the illusion of power.
