Chapter 3 - THE FORMER ALLY

The rain poured heavily as I drove thirty miles outside the city toward the historic district of Greenwich. The children had fallen asleep in the backseat, lulled by the rhythm of the windshield wipers.

I pulled up to a gated, stone-walled estate and pressed the intercom button.

"Claire?" a sharp, elegant voice crackled through the speaker.

"It's me, Victoria. I'm outside."

The iron gates swung open immediately.

Victoria Sterling was the top matrimonial attorney in the state, notorious for devastating arrogant billionaire husbands in court. But to me, she was also my former mentor and the woman who had warned me nine years ago not to marry Ryan Bennett.

“He doesn't want a partner, Claire,” she had told me on my wedding eve. “He wants a captive asset.”

It had taken me nine years to admit she was right.

Two umbrella-bearing staff members ran out to help carry the kids inside while Victoria wrapped a warm cashmere shawl around my shoulders. She ushered me into her private library, where a fire crackled in the fireplace and a hot cup of chamomile tea waited on the desk.

"You actually did it tonight," Victoria said, sipping her tea as she looked at the three packed suitcases sitting in her foyer.

"He brought her into the dining room," I said quietly, taking a small sip. "In front of Ethan and Sophie. He told me she was moving into the guest suite."

Victoria’s eyes flashed with cold rage. "The arrogance of that man never ceases to amaze me. Does he have any idea you’ve been meeting with forensic accountants for half a year?"

"None," I replied, opening my leather briefcase and laying out the neatly organized folders. "He thinks I’m broke, helpless, and completely dependent on his corporate allowance. He locked my primary credit cards last week to test my boundaries."

"And the recorder?"

I reached into my pocket, pulled out the sleek digital device, and set it on the desk. "It captured everything. The announcement, Margaret’s tacit approval, Daniel’s silence, and Ryan threatening to restrict my movements."

Victoria smiled—a terrifying, predatory smile. "That recording violates no wiretapping laws since it was conducted in your primary residence where you had full consent, and it destroys his claim that he was attempting a peaceful marital separation."

She pulled out a blue folder stamped with the seal of the Superior Family Court.

"Tomorrow morning at 8:30 AM, while Ryan is sipping his morning coffee with Miss Cole, my process server will deliver the divorce petition along with an ex-parte emergency order for full temporary custody and a temporary freeze on all joint liquid assets."

I leaned back, resting my hand on my belly. The baby kicked gently against my palm.

"He thinks he trapped me, Victoria."

"My dear," Victoria replied, pulling out her fountain pen. "He just handed us the keys to his empire."
