Chapter 14 - A CHANCE ENCOUNTER

Two years after the divorce was finalized, I took the children on a trip to Boston to visit a interactive science museum.
While strolling through the city harbor park afterward, Ethan was running ahead with his kite, while I carried Hope on my hip and held Sophie’s hand.
A man sitting on a park bench pulled down his newspaper and froze as he saw us walk by.
It was Daniel Bennett—Ryan’s younger brother.
He looked different. He was dressed simply, the smug arrogance he used to wear completely gone.
"Claire?" he called out hesitantly, standing up.
I stopped, keeping a polite distance. "Hello, Daniel."
Ethan came running back, holding his kite, standing protectively in front of me. Daniel looked down at his nephew, his eyes filling with deep regret.
"He... he looks so much like his grandfather," Daniel whispered. He looked at Hope in my arms. "Is this... Hope?"
"Yes," I answered calmly. "This is Hope."
Daniel swallowed hard, pulling his hands into his pockets. "Claire... I just wanted to say... I'm sorry. For that night in the dining room. I knew what Ryan was doing was wrong. I was a coward. I was afraid if I stood up to him, he’d cut me off financially."
I listened to him, feeling no bitterness, only the calm clarity of someone who had long moved past the trauma.
"Thank you for saying that, Daniel," I said evenly. "I hope you’ve learned to stand on your own feet since then."
"I have," Daniel nodded emotionally. "I left the family firm. I work in teaching now... How is Ryan?"
"He has another year left on his sentence," I replied. "He receives his mandated court updates about the children’s trusts, but he has waived his right to visitation."
Daniel nodded slowly. "He was too proud to let them see him in there."

"That was his choice," I said gently. "Take care of yourself, Daniel."
I turned and continued walking down the sunlit pier with my children. The past no longer had any pull over me.
