Chapter 4 - THE MORNING AFTER

At 8:00 AM the following morning, the sun rose over the Bennett estate.

Ryan Bennett woke up feeling victorious. He put on his tailored Italian suit, walked down to the sunlit kitchen, and poured himself a cup of dark roast coffee. Vanessa was standing by the island in a silk robe, sipping orange juice.

"Did you check on her?" Vanessa asked, leaning against the marble counter. "She was suspiciously quiet last night."

Ryan smirked, adjusting his Rolex. "Claire has nowhere to go, Vanessa. Her parents are gone, she hasn't worked in six years, and her name isn't on the primary deed of this house. She’s probably upstairs sulking, waiting for me to apologize so she can ask for her credit card allowance back."

"What about the kids?"

"They'll get used to it," Ryan said smoothly. "Ethan needs to learn how the world really works anyway."

The doorbell rang.

Ryan frowned. "Are we expecting a delivery this early?"

He walked to the front grand foyer and opened the heavy oak door. Standing on the porch was a tall man in a navy trench coat holding a thick manila envelope.

"Ryan Bennett?" the man asked.

"Yes. Who are you?"

"You've been served." The man shoved the envelope into Ryan's hands, took a quick timestamped photo with his phone, and turned on his heel without another word.

Ryan stood frozen on the porch. He slowly opened the envelope and pulled out the legal documents.

SUPERIOR COURT OF CONNECTICUT: FAMILY DIVISIONCLAIRE BENNETT vs. RYAN BENNETTPETITION FOR DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE & EMERGENCY EX-PARTE RESTRAINING ORDER

Ryan’s eyes skimmed the pages, his face draining of color.

Emergency Sole Physical Custody granted to the Plaintiff.Temporary Asset Freeze on accounts ending in #4092, #8811, #1094.Order to Vacate the marital residence within 48 hours pending housing audit.

"What is that?" Vanessa asked, walking into the foyer.

Ryan didn't answer. He turned and sprinted up the stairs to the master bedroom, then down the hall to the children's rooms.

He threw open the door to the nursery.

The room was completely empty of clothing. The drawers were pulled open. And sitting right in the center of the changing table was my silver wedding ring, resting neatly on top of a single printed piece of paper.

Ryan walked over with shaking hands and picked up the paper. It was a printed bank confirmation showing a balance transfer completed at 11:45 PM the night before.

It was the offshore account he had secretly set up in the Cayman Islands under Vanessa’s name—the account he thought I knew nothing about. The balance read: $0.00.

At the bottom of the page, I had written a note in neat handwriting:

“You thought I couldn’t survive without your money. You forgot that I was the one who managed your father’s trusts before we married. See you in court, Ryan.”
