Chapter 4 - NIGHT AT HEADQUARTERS

A violent autumn storm slammed against the glass facade of the Calloway Logistics corporate headquarters in midtown Manhattan. Rain poured down the black tower like cascading sheets of silver.

At 2:00 AM, the fifty-story building was completely dark—except for the executive corner office on the top floor.

Inside, Ethan Calloway was frantically shoving physical files into an industrial shredder while a external hard drive hummed loudly, plugged into the primary mainframe server. Sweat dripped down his forehead, soaking the collar of his suit shirt.

Vanessa Reed stood near the glass door, wringing her hands nervously while watching the elevator lobby.

“Ethan, this is insane!” Vanessa hissed, her voice trembling with panic. “If the board finds out we broke into the server room after hours, they’ll file criminal charges! My career will be destroyed!”

“Shut up, Vanessa!” Ethan screamed, violently throwing another batch of financial audits into the shredder. “My life is already over if that hard drive doesn't finish wiping the secondary ledgers! Grace thinks she can take everything from me? The house, the stock, the company? I built this place!”

“No, you didn't, Ethan,” a cold, clear voice chimed from the darkness of the open doorway.

Ethan whirled around, dropping a stack of folders onto the floor.

Grace stood in the doorway, wearing a long charcoal wool coat. Behind her stood Declan, flanked by four uniformed private security officers and the company’s chief head of IT security, David Chen.

Vanessa gasped, shrinking back against the wall.

Ethan’s eyes went wild. “How did you get in here? The building access locks were revoked for non-executives!”

“I built the security protocol for this building five years ago, Ethan,” Grace said, walking calmly into the office. She gestured to David Chen. “David, disconnect that hard drive and isolate the mainframe immediately.”

“Don't touch that server!” Ethan yelled, stepping toward David.

Before Ethan could take two steps, two of Declan’s security guards moved forward, stepping firmly into his path and locking him in place.

“Get your hands off me!” Ethan screamed, struggling against the guards’ immovable grip. “This is breaking and entering! I am the CEO of this company!”

“Not anymore,” David Chen said quietly as he unplugged the external wiping device and secured it in an anti-static security bag. “The board executed an emergency vote twenty minutes ago via video conference. You have been officially suspended from all corporate duties, Mr. Calloway.”

Ethan stared in total disbelief. “An emergency vote? At two in the morning?”

“When you have thirty percent non-voting equity backed by Declan Pierce, emergency board meetings happen very quickly,” Grace said, walking over to Ethan’s desk. She looked at the half-shredded paper scattered across the leather mat. “Did you really think deleting local files would erase the paper trail? Everything was backed up to an off-site cloud server six weeks ago.”

Ethan’s shoulders slumped. The wild anger in his eyes slowly dissolved into hollow terror. He looked at Grace, his breathing shallow and rapid.

“Grace... please,” Ethan stammered, his tone suddenly shifting from rage to desperate begging. “Please, think about what you’re doing. We’re family. We’re having a baby boy in two months! You can't put your own husband in prison!”

Grace looked at him with profound pity. “You stopped thinking about this family the moment you transferred our child’s future into offshore accounts for your mistress. You didn't care about our son when you left me alone in Connecticut to vacation at the Halcyon.”

Ethan turned his desperate eyes toward Vanessa. “Vanessa! Tell her! Tell her it was your idea! You asked for the money!”

Vanessa’s eyes widened in utter shock. “What? Ethan, you lying coward! You told me the money was your personal quarterly dividend!”

“You pushed me to buy that villa in Miami!” Ethan yelled at her. “You threatened to leave me if I didn't fund your company!”

Vanessa scoffed, tears of fury springing to her eyes. She turned to Grace. “Mrs. Calloway, I’m sorry. He lied to me too. He told me you two were already legally separated and that you were just using him for his money!”

Grace held up a single hand, stopping both of them instantly.

“Save it for the grand jury,” Grace said quietly.

She turned to the security guards. “Escort Mr. Calloway and Ms. Reed out of the building. If either of them attempts to re-enter the premises, press immediate trespassing charges.”

The security guards grabbed Ethan’s arms. He began to thrash violently. “Grace! You can't do this to me! I made you! You were nothing before me!”

Declan stepped forward, his eyes flashing like forged steel. “Take him away.”

The guards dragged Ethan screaming down the hallway toward the elevators, with Vanessa running frantically behind them, crying into her hands.

The office fell completely silent, save for the rain pounding against the glass.

Grace stood by the desk, resting a hand on her pregnant belly. Her body gave a subtle, exhausted tremble. The immense stress of the past forty-eight hours was finally catching up to her.

Declan instantly stepped close, placing a warm, steady hand on her shoulder. “Grace. Breathe. It’s over.”

Grace closed her eyes, letting out a long, shaky breath. She leaned back slightly, allowing Declan’s strong frame to support her weight.

May you like

“It’s not over yet, Declan,” Grace whispered, looking out over the rain-slicked city skyline. “Now I have to rebuild everything.”

“You won't have to do it alone,” Declan said softly near her ear. “Not this time.”
