Chapter 8 - REAPING THE WHIRLWIND

Six months later.
The Federal District Court of New York was cold, gray, and unforgiving.
Ethan Calloway sat at the defense table in a orange prison jumpsuit. His hair was messy and unkempt, his face hollow, and his eyes sunken with dark circles. The six months spent in federal detention awaiting trial had completely shattered his sleek, arrogant persona.
Beside him sat his public defender. Marcus Vance had dropped Ethan as a client months ago after Ethan’s bank accounts were completely drained to pay off back taxes, legal fees, and corporate fines.
In the front row of the gallery sat Grace. She looked stunning in an ivory blazer and trousers, her golden hair swept back neatly. Beside her sat Declan, impeccably dressed in a charcoal three-piece suit, holding Grace’s hand in his warm, steady grip.
Judge Harrison straightened her papers on the bench, looking down at Ethan with stern disgust.
“In the matter of the United States v. Ethan Calloway,” the judge announced, her voice booming across the quiet courtroom. “The defendant has been found guilty on eleven federal counts, including wire fraud, embezzlement, tax evasion, and corporate espionage.”
Ethan stared blankly at the floor, his hands trembling in his restraints.
“Ethan Calloway,” Judge Harrison continued, “your actions reflected a systematic, sociopathic disregard for corporate law, your financial obligations, and the well-being of your family. You showed no remorse until you were caught.”
She picked up her pen. “This court hereby sentences you to fourteen years in federal penitentiary, without the possibility of parole for the first ten years. Furthermore, you are ordered to pay forty-two million dollars in total restitution to Pierce-Calloway Global.”
BANG.
Ethan’s public defender sighed, closing his briefcase.
As the federal marshals pulled Ethan up to lead him out through the side doors, Ethan turned his head desperately toward the gallery. His eyes locked onto Grace.
“Grace!” Ethan cried out, his voice raspy and broken. “Grace, please! Ten years? I won't survive ten years in there! Please... talk to the prosecutor! Tell them to reduce the sentence! Do it for Leo!”
Grace slowly stood up. She looked at Ethan—the man who had lied to her, cheated on her, and tried to ruin her life—and felt absolutely nothing. No hatred. No anger. Only complete indifference.
“Leo has a real father now, Ethan,” Grace said calmly, her voice echoing clearly across the room. “A man of honor. Goodbye, Ethan.”
Ethan wailed in despair as the marshals forcefully dragged him through the heavy iron doors, slamming them shut forever.
Grace turned to Declan, who was standing beside her. He looked down at her with quiet pride, opening his arm to pull her close against his side.

“It’s finally over,” Grace murmured softly, resting her head against his chest.
“No, Grace,” Declan corrected softly, kissing the top of her head. “The past is over. Our life is just beginning.”
