Chapter 9 - THE SUNLIT RESORT

One year later.

The sun rose warmly over the private white-sand beach of St. Barts. Turquoise waves crashed softly against the shore, and a gentle tropical breeze rustled through the palm fronds surrounding an exclusive beachfront estate.

On the wooden deck overlooking the ocean, little Leo—now a happy, chubby fourteen-month-old toddler with Declan’s intense grey eyes and Grace’s golden hair—was happily giggling as he crawled across a soft woven outdoor blanket, chasing a bright red beach ball.

Declan sat on the edge of the blanket in a linen shirt and shorts, laughing warmly as he caught the baby, lifting him up into the air. Leo shrieked with laughter, kicking his tiny feet.

Grace walked out onto the deck wearing a flowing sun dress, holding two glasses of freshly squeezed orange juice. She paused for a moment, simply watching the two men in her life.

If someone had told her two years ago—when she stood pregnant and heartbroken in the lobby of the Halcyon Crown Resort—that she would find such deep, absolute happiness, she would never have believed it. But standing here now, watching Declan play with her son, she knew that every painful step had led her to where she truly belonged.

Grace walked over, setting the glasses on a side table, and sat down on the blanket beside Declan.

Declan set Leo down gently on Grace’s lap. He put his arm around Grace’s waist, pulling her close into his side.

“What are you thinking about?” Declan asked softly, resting his chin on her shoulder.

“I was thinking about the Halcyon,” Grace admitted, smiling faintly as she kissed Leo’s chubby cheek. “About the day I saw you walking into that lobby.”

Declan chuckled softly. “You were incredible that day, Grace. You looked like an absolute queen stepping over garbage.”

“I was terrified, Declan,” Grace confessed softly, turning her head to look into his eyes. “My heart was pounding so fast. But when I looked over and saw you standing beside me... I knew I wasn't alone.”

Declan’s face grew tender. He reached into his linen pocket and pulled out a small, dark velvet box.

Grace’s breath caught in her throat.

Declan shifted onto one knee on the warm wooden deck. He opened the box to reveal a breathtaking, flawless seven-carat canary yellow diamond ring that sparkled like sunlight on ocean water.

“Grace,” Declan began, his voice deep and filled with profound emotion. “Ten years ago, I lost you because I wasn't strong enough to fight for you. One year ago, you gave me the honor of standing by your side as you reclaimed your life. You and Leo are my entire world. Everything I built means nothing without you to share it with.”

Declan took her soft hand in his. “Grace Calloway, will you do me the absolute honor of becoming my wife?”

Tears of pure joy welled in Grace’s eyes, glittering like diamonds in the morning sun. She looked at the man who had protected her, cherished her, and loved her son as his own.

“Yes,” Grace whispered, her voice overflowing with love. “Yes, Declan! A thousand times yes!”

Declan slid the ring onto her finger. He stood up, pulling Grace into his arms, and kissed her deeply beneath the clear blue sky, while little Leo clapped his tiny hands happily on the blanket beside them.
