Chapter 5 - THE LEGAL SHARK TANK

Three weeks later, the war moved from the boardroom to the elite corridors of the New York State Supreme Court.

Ethan had hired Marcus Vance—a ruthless, high-priced defense attorney notorious for ripping apart prenuptial agreements and destroying reputations in high-profile celebrity divorces. Vance’s strategy was clear: drag Grace through an agonizing, public legal battle, question her mental stability during pregnancy, and claim that the corporate takeover was a pre-meditated conspiracy orchestrated by Declan Pierce to steal Ethan’s legal assets.

The grand courtroom was packed with press reporters, high-society journalists, and camera crews.

Ethan sat at the defense table wearing a crisp grey suit, looking composed and confident. Beside him, Marcus Vance adjusted his golden glasses, flipping through a thick stack of depositions.

Across the aisle sat Grace. She wore an elegant navy suit that beautifully accommodated her eight-month bump. Beside her sat her legal team, headed by Sarah Jenkins—a brilliant, relentless corporate family attorney—and Declan Pierce, who sat calmly in the gallery directly behind Grace, his towering presence casting a long shadow over the entire room.

Judge Harrison, a stern woman with sharp grey hair, slammed her gavel down. “We are here in the matter of Calloway v. Calloway regarding emergency asset freezing, corporate governance disputes, and interim divorce proceedings. Mr. Vance, you requested this emergency hearing. You may speak.”

Marcus Vance stood up, buttoning his jacket. He smoothed his gray hair and turned to face the judge with an easy, practiced smile.

“Thank you, Your Honor,” Vance began, his voice echoing smoothly. “What we are witnessing here today is not a standard corporate restructuring, nor is it a simple matrimonial dispute. It is a calculated, cold-blooded corporate execution engineered by my client’s estranged wife, Grace Calloway, in active collusion with billionaire Declan Pierce.”

Murmurs rippled through the press gallery.

Vance pointed a finger at Grace. “Mrs. Calloway claims financial misconduct. Yet, she conveniently waited until she was in her third trimester—a time of intense physical and emotional vulnerability—to spring a surprise hostile takeover on my client. We have medical records indicating Mrs. Calloway suffered from elevated blood pressure and anxiety. We contend that her decision-making capabilities were severely compromised by pregnancy hormones, making her susceptible to the aggressive influence of Mr. Declan Pierce!”

Ethan offered a subtle, triumphant smirk toward Grace.

Grace didn't react. She sat perfectly still, her face an unreadable mask of cool composure.

Judge Harrison frowned, turning her sharp gaze toward Grace’s attorney. “Ms. Jenkins, respond.”

Sarah Jenkins stood up calmly. She didn't raise her voice. She simply picked up a sleek white tablet and tapped the screen, casting a high-definition video feed onto the large display monitors mounted on the courtroom walls.

“Your Honor,” Sarah said clearly. “Opposing counsel wishes to paint my client as an emotionally unstable, hysterical pregnant woman led astray by a wealthy man. Allow us to present Exhibit A: the real-time financial tracking software designed personally by Grace Calloway.”

On the screens, complex financial flowcharts lit up in bright red and gold.

“This software,” Sarah continued, “was created by Mrs. Calloway four months ago. It automatically tracked seventy-two separate wire transfers authorized directly by Ethan Calloway. These transfers bypassed board oversight and moved directly into numbered offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands.”

Sarah clicked to the next slide. A series of high-resolution bank statements appeared, along with hotel receipts, diamond jewelry invoices, and wire transfers to Vanessa Reed’s shell company.

“Furthermore,” Sarah stated, her voice slicing through the courtroom like a scalpel, “we submit into evidence the sworn deposition of Ms. Vanessa Reed, who has entered into a full plea bargain with the Southern District District Attorney’s office.”

Ethan’s jaw snapped shut. His face went instantly pale. He whipped his head around to look at his lawyer.

“Ms. Reed’s testimony,” Sarah read aloud, “confirms that Mr. Calloway explicitly promised her that he would drain Calloway Logistics’ liquid reserves, leave his pregnant wife with an insolvent company, and flee to non-extradition territories if the board ever discovered his fraud.”

The courtroom erupted into quiet chaos. Reporters leaned forward, typing furiously on their laptops.

Judge Harrison slammed her gavel repeatedly. “Order! Order in this court!”

She glared down at Marcus Vance, whose charming smile had completely vanished. “Mr. Vance, do you have any response to this evidence?”

Vance stammered, looking down at his notes. “Your... Your Honor, my client maintains that these transfers were legitimate business development expenses—”

“Enough,” Judge Harrison interrupted coldly. “The evidence of intentional fraud and fiduciary breach is overwhelming. This court hereby denies the defense’s motion to lift the asset freeze.”

Judge Harrison turned her gaze to Ethan Calloway. “Mr. Calloway, your personal bank accounts remain frozen. Your voting rights in Calloway Logistics remain suspended pending criminal prosecution. And Mrs. Grace Calloway is granted full, exclusive temporary custody of her unborn child, along with exclusive occupancy of the marital estate.”

BANG.

“Court is adjourned.”

Grace slowly stood up as the courtroom dissolved into noise. Ethan sat frozen in his chair, staring blankly at the dark screen displaying his crimes.

As Grace turned to walk down the aisle, Ethan suddenly sprang from his chair, lunging toward her. “Grace! Grace, look at me!”

Declan instantly stepped between them, his tall frame blocking Ethan completely. Declan caught Ethan by the lapels of his suit, pinning him back with effortless strength.

“Don't even breathe near her, Ethan,” Declan growled in a dangerous, quiet rumble. “You lost. It’s over.”

Ethan looked into Declan’s unyielding eyes, seeing absolute defeat staring back at him. The guards seized Ethan, pulling him away in handcuffs as Declan turned to walk Grace safely out into the afternoon sunlight.
