Chapter 11 - THE FRACTURED DYNASTY

By Friday evening, the Vance family dynasty had completely imploded.
With Richard Vance arrested at his corporate headquarters by federal agents and Helen Vance sitting in a county jail cell awaiting trial for conspiracy, the media feeding frenzy reached a fever pitch. Financial news networks ran wall-to-wall exposés on the collapse of Vance Logistics, detailing years of pension theft, offshore shell companies, and systematic corruption.
Inside the hospital, however, the noise of the outside world faded into the steady, rhythmic beep of medical monitors.
Emily was finally sitting up in her hospital bed, eating a bowl of broth, her color returning slowly to her cheeks. The doctors confirmed that her pelvic fractures were healing well, and her internal bleeding had completely ceased.
And in the NICU, our daughter—whom we named Maya Grace Vance—had reached four pounds, six ounces, and had successfully transitioned off the ventilator to a nasal cannula.
I sat beside Emily’s bed, holding her hand, while we watched a live news broadcast on the tablet screen.
“...breaking news tonight,” the anchor reported, “as Barton & Sterling, the high-profile defense firm representing Richard and Chloe Vance, have formally announced they are withdrawing from the case due to irreconcilable conflicts of interest and unpayable legal retainers. Sources close to the investigation indicate that federal prosecutors are preparing a massive fifty-count federal indictment encompassing wire fraud, embezzlement, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy to commit murder.”
Emily let out a long, shuddering breath, resting her head against my shoulder. "It's really happening, isn't it? They're finally going to pay for what they did."
"They're going away for a very long time," I whispered, kissing the top of her head. "And they will never, ever come near you or our daughter again."
The door to the room opened softly, and Prosecutor Evelyn Vance stepped inside, holding a thick folder.
"Good evening, Mr. and Mrs. Vance," Evelyn said with a warm smile. "I brought some good news that I think will help you sleep tonight."

"What is it?" Emily asked, sitting up straighter.
"Based on Sarah Jenkins' testimony and the financial audit records we seized from your father's office, we’ve secured formal indictments against both Richard and Helen Vance as co-conspirators in the attempted murder plot," Evelyn announced. "They are being held without bail as flight risks. Furthermore, all remaining corporate assets have been seized by the federal bankruptcy court, which means they have zero financial resources left to mount a defense."
