Chapter 4 - THE UNHOLY ALLIANCE

The digital playback looped silently on my laptop screen, the timestamp freezing on Chloe’s twisted grin.
Click. Nod. Push.
It was a choreography of malice executed with chilling precision. My mother hadn't been standing idly by; she had acted as the spotter, confirming that the hallway was clear of neighbors or domestic staff before giving the green light.
My stomach heaved, and I barely made it to the powder room sink before I vomited violently. Splashing cold water over my face, I stared at my reflection in the mirror. My eyes were bloodshot, dark hollows bruised beneath them. The man looking back at me was a stranger—a man who had spent thirty-two years believing he belonged to a loving, honorable family, only to discover he was living in the middle of a sociopathic syndicate.
I grabbed my phone, opened an encrypted file-transfer portal, and uploaded the raw video file directly to Officer Miller’s professional email, attaching a detailed written statement: Case: Aggravated Attempted Murder and Fetal Endangerment. Evidence attached.
Within four minutes, my phone rang. The caller ID flashed UNKNOWN.
I swiped to answer.
"Ryan?" It was Officer Miller’s voice, sharp and professional. "Did you send this file?"
"I did," I said, my voice steady. "Every second of it. My sister Chloe pushed my wife down the stairs. And in the background of the frame, you can see my mother signaling her."
There was a heavy pause on the other end of the line. "Mr. Vance, this is explicit, undeniable evidence of felony assault resulting in grievous bodily harm and endangerment of a minor. We are dispatching a unit to your family residence immediately. I advise you to stay away from the property for your own safety."
"I'm not going back there," I replied. "I'm heading back to the hospital. My wife and newborn daughter need me."
"Understood. We'll secure the arrest warrant within the hour."
I slammed the laptop shut, grabbed my car keys, and walked out to the garage. But as I pulled out of the driveway, a sleek black Mercedes pulled in, blocking my exit.
The headlights high-beamed me, blinding me through the windshield. The driver’s door swung open, and my father stepped out, his face mottled with rage. He strode directly toward my driver’s side window, banging his fist against the glass.
"Roll down the window, Ryan! Now!" he bellowed.
I hit the control, and the glass slid down an inch. "Get out of my way, Dad. I'm warning you."
"You sent something to the police, didn't you?" Richard Vance snarled, leaning down so his face was inches from mine, his eyes wild with panic. "The detectives just called my cell. They said an arrest warrant is being issued for Chloe! Do you have any idea what this does to the Vance Logistics IPO next month? Do you know how many millions of dollars you are flushing down the toilet for a gold-digging outsider?"
"A gold-digger?" I laughed, a harsh, humorless sound. "Emily worked three jobs while I was in grad school. She gave me a daughter while your daughter tried to murder them both. You care more about stock shares than human lives."
"She is your sister!" my father roared, slamming his palm against the car door frame. "Families protect their own! That’s how empires are built! If you ruin Chloe, I swear to God, Ryan, I will ruin you. You'll leave this family with nothing more than the clothes on your back!"

"Consider me gone," I whispered.
I threw the car into reverse, swerved around his Mercedes onto the lawn, and tore down the street, leaving my father screaming obscenities into the midnight air.
