Chapter 18 - CORNERED IN OPEN COURT

The trial lasted four agonizing days.

Prosecutor Evelyn Vance presented an airtight, devastating case. She played the raw, high-definition nanny cam video of the push on the courtroom's massive projection screens, letting the jury watch in stunned silence as Chloe shoved Emily down the stairs and giggled.

She played the recovered audio recording of Chloe and Helen conspiring in the kitchen just minutes before the attack, proving premeditation beyond debate.

She introduced former nanny Sarah Jenkins' testimony, detailing a decade of covered-up violence, broken bones, and paid-off victims.

And finally, she introduced the forensic accounting records proving the existence of the two-million-dollar life insurance policy naming Vance Logistics as the primary beneficiary.

When it was the defense's turn, Marcus Vance tried desperately to argue that Chloe was suffering from "diminished capacity" and emotional distress caused by family pressure. But under cross-examination by Evelyn Vance, Chloe completely unraveled on the stand.

"Isn't it true, Ms. Vance, that you laughed immediately after your sister-in-law fell?" Evelyn asked sharply, stepping close to the witness box.

"She deserved it!" Chloe shrieked, slamming her fists down on the wooden railing, her facade of calm instantly shattering. "She was a nobody! A gold-digger who tried to ruin our family! She ruined everything!"

A collective gasp echoed through the courtroom gallery.

Judge Holloway slammed her gavel down twice. "Order! Order in the courtroom! Ms. Vance, you will control your outbursts or you will be held in contempt."

Chloe sat back down, trembling with rage, her mask entirely destroyed. The jury watched her with cold, uncompromising eyes.
