Chapter 17 - THE TRIAL BEGINS

The morning of the trial, the steps of the county courthouse were packed shoulder-to-shoulder with journalists, camera crews, and curious onlookers.

The State of New York v. Chloe Vance & Helen Vance was officially the most high-profile criminal proceeding of the year.

I walked up the stone steps hand-in-hand with Emily, who wore a sharp black blazer and carried herself with unyielding grace. We didn't look at the cameras. We didn't acknowledge the reporters shouting questions. We walked straight through the heavy oak doors into the courtroom.

Sitting at the defense table in matching gray prison jumpsuits were Chloe and Helen Vance.

Helen looked older, her hair completely gray, her face hollowed out by months of detention. Chloe stared straight ahead with a blank, glazed expression, refusing to make eye contact with anyone in the gallery.

Judge Margaret Holloway struck her gavel, calling the courtroom to order.

"We are here today to commence the trial in the matter of The State versus Chloe Vance," Judge Holloway announced, her voice severe and uncompromising. "Prosecution, you may opening statement."

Prosecutor Evelyn Vance stood up, buttoning her jacket, and walked slowly toward the jury box.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury," Evelyn began, her voice carrying clear and resonant across the courtroom. "For generations, the Vance family name was synonymous with power, wealth, and privilege in this city. But behind the manicured hedges and gated entryways lay a dark, rotting truth: a family that believed their wealth placed them above the law, above human decency, and above the sanctity of human life."

She turned around, pointing directly at the defense table.

"On the evening of November 7th, defendant Chloe Vance attempted to murder her eight-month pregnant sister-in-law, Emily Vance, by shoving her down a flight of hardwood stairs, while her mother, Helen Vance, acted as a willing accomplice and lookout. They did it for money. They did it to protect a failing financial empire built on lies, fraud, and stolen pensions. And today, we are going to prove it beyond any shadow of a doubt."
