Chapter 13 - THE MISSING AUDIO

With the legal battles turning decisively in our favor, the focus shifted to the upcoming criminal trial for Chloe and her parents.

One evening, while reviewing the master digital evidence files provided by the police technical unit, I noticed something strange in the audio track of the nanny cam footage from the night of the fall.

The primary video file had captured the push and Chloe’s giggle, but a secondary audio channel—designed to pick up ambient sound across the entire first floor—had been filtered out by the initial police triage team due to background static.

I plugged the micro-SD card into my personal workstation, imported the raw audio into an advanced sound-editing suite, and ran a noise-reduction filter, isolating the frequency range of human speech.

I put on my studio headphones and hit play.

At 7:12 PM—two minutes before Emily walked down the stairs—the audio picked up a whispered conversation between Chloe and my mother standing near the kitchen island.

“She’s going to check the safe again tonight,” my mother’s voice hissed clearly through the headphones. “If she finds those transfer receipts, your father and I are ruined. Everything we built... gone.”

“So let her slip,” Chloe’s voice replied, cold and flat. “Accidents happen on hardwood stairs all the time when women are eight months pregnant. It’s so clumsy.”

“Make sure there are no witnesses,” my mother instructed. “And make sure the camera... wait, is that clock plugged in?”

“Nobody looks at that stupid clock, Mom. It looks like a digital calendar.”

I sat frozen in my chair, the hairs on the back of my neck standing up. It wasn't just a spontaneous act of cruelty; it was a premeditated assassination plot discussed openly in our kitchen while dinner was being prepared.

I exported the audio file immediately and sent it directly to Prosecutor Evelyn Vance with the subject line: SMOKING GUN - PREMEDITATION AUDIO PROOF.
