Chapter 1 - The Ashes of White Lace

The silence in my childhood bedroom was heavier than the heavy satin and tulle of the ruined dress draped across the floral duvet.

I stood paralyzed, staring at the jagged, deliberate slashes across the bodice. Twenty-eight years of trying to be the good daughter, the dependable sister, the woman who never made waves—all of it seemed to pool into those jagged scissor holes. My mother’s voice message still echoed in my ears: “Lauren is having a breakdown... We’ll come to you later.”

They never came.

Across Columbus, Daniel was waiting at St. Jude’s. When my maid of honor, Chloe, finally zipped me into an emergency sample dress two sizes too big—borrowed from a frantic boutique owner who recognized my name from the local registry—my hands didn't shake anymore. They were ice.

When the local news broadcast cut into the evening programming with the chyron, “Viral Wedding Scandal: Bride Walks Down Aisle Alone After Family Abandons Her for Stepsister’s Ceremony,” my phone didn't just buzz; it screamed.

My father’s number flashed on the screen: Mark Miller.

I didn't answer. I didn't need to. I watched the grainy footage of Lauren stepping out of a rented vintage Rolls-Royce across town, radiant in a pristine custom gown that looked suspiciously like the design sketches I had left on the family dining table three weeks ago. My mother was standing right behind her, dabbing her eyes with a lace handkerchief.

Daniel walked into our apartment at 9:00 PM, loosening his bowtie with a heavy sigh. He didn't say a word. He just walked straight to me, pulled me into his arms, and buried his face in my hair.

"They're trending number one in the state," Daniel whispered, his voice rough. "People online are digging into Lauren's wedding company. Apparently, half her vendor deposits bounced."

I pulled back, my eyes catching the reflection of my pale face in the living room window. "They made their choice," I whispered, my voice steady in a way that scared even me. "Now they get to live with the consequences."
