Chapter 3 - The Inheritance Clause

Three days after the wedding, a certified letter arrived at our apartment. It wasn't from my parents. It was from Harrison & Sterling Attorneys at Law—the firm that had managed my late grandmother’s estate.
Daniel sat across from me at the dining table as I broke the wax seal on the heavy parchment envelope.
"What is it?" Daniel asked, leaning forward.
"Grandma Evelyn’s secondary will," I said, scanning the legal jargon. My heart hammered against my ribs. "The one my parents always claimed didn't exist."
Grandma Evelyn had passed away five years ago, leaving her historic estate and a substantial trust fund to be divided equally among her grandchildren—with one very specific, highly restrictive clause.
I read the highlighted paragraph aloud:“Furthermore, should any beneficiary attempt to sabotage, defraud, or intentionally cause severe emotional or financial distress to another primary beneficiary prior to or during their wedding day, verified by legal affidavit or independent public record, said perpetrator shall immediately forfeit all rights to their share of the Evelyn Vance Estate, transferring in full to the victimized party.”
Daniel’s jaw dropped. "Are you serious? How much is the estate worth now with the downtown commercial properties?"
"Close to two million dollars," I whispered, looking up. "And Lauren just committed blatant sabotage on live national television, backed by hundreds of public investigative videos, unpaid vendor claims, and police reports filed by the caterers."

"Your parents put everything they had into backing Lauren's lavish wedding," Daniel said, realization dawning in his eyes. "They co-signed her venue loans using grandma’s estate collateral as leverage, thinking they’d control the whole pot once the trust cleared next month."
I stood up, walking over to the window as the morning sun broke over the Columbus skyline. "They bet everything on Lauren, and Lauren is a sinking ship. If we file this affidavit today, the estate goes straight to me. And my parents... they’ll be financially ruined."
