Chapter 15 - The Final Echo

That evening, after returning home to our quiet house in German Village, I sat on the back porch swing as twilight settled over the brick-paved streets.

Daniel sat beside me, gently holding my hand while we watched the fireflies flicker across the lawn.

"Chad came to the office today," I said quietly, breaking the silence.

Daniel turned his head, his eyes searching mine. "What did he want?"

"To tell me Lauren ran off to Los Angeles and cleaned out my parents' remaining accounts," I sighed, resting my head against his shoulder. "They're losing the townhouse now, too. My parents have literally nothing left."

"Do you feel guilty?" Daniel asked softly, his thumb gently stroking the back of my hand.

I thought about it for a long, quiet moment. I thought about the ruined dress hanging in my childhood bedroom. I thought about my mother’s cold voice message on my wedding morning, abandoning me without a second thought. I thought about the grandmother who foresaw this exact brand of cruelty and protected me from the grave.

"No," I whispered honestly. "I don't feel guilty. I feel... free."

Daniel smiled, leaning over to kiss my forehead. "Good. Because your family isn't the people who share your DNA, Emily. Your family is right here."

Inside, the warm lights of our home glowed softly through the windows, casting a golden hue across the wooden floors. There was no drama, no toxic competition, no backstabbing sisters or demanding parents. Just peace, love, and a future built on our own terms.
