Chapter 3 - Fractured Glass

The confrontation in the sunroom was swift, sharp, and merciless. When Luca burst through the double doors, Vanessa was supervising a florist arrangement for the upcoming bridal shower. She turned with a radiant smile, expecting her fiancé, only to find a storm brewing in his dark eyes.

"Luca, darling! Just look at these orchids—" Vanessa began, before the look on his face froze the words in her throat.

"Is it true?" Luca demanded, his voice echoing off the glass paneled walls.

Vanessa blinked, feigning utter confusion. "Is what true? What are you talking about?"

"Don't play games with me, Vanessa," he stepped closer, towering over her. "Claire told me what you’ve been saying to Isabella. She told me how you’ve forbidden her from signing, how you’ve ordered the staff and photographers to hide her, and how you’ve been poisoning her mind against her own home."

For a fraction of a second, Vanessa’s mask slipped, revealing a flash of panic, but she quickly recovered, adopting an air of aggrieved martyrdom. She crossed her arms, letting out a theatrical sigh. "Oh, please. That meddling housekeeper has been filling your head with nonsense. I am trying to raise a young lady, Luca! Do you have any idea what people say behind our backs? A prominent family cannot have a child flailing her hands around at every high-profile event like a wild animal."

"She is deaf, Vanessa!" Luca roared, slamming his hand down on a marble-topped table, rattling the crystal vases. "Her hands are her voice! How dare you try to silence her?"

"I am trying to protect her future!" Vanessa fired back, her own temper finally flaring. "My future! Our family's standing in this city! If you want to spend the rest of your life coddling a disabled child who refuses to adapt, go right ahead. But when we are married, things have to change. She needs discipline, not endless excuses!"

Luca stared at the woman he had proposed to just a week ago, realizing with sickening clarity that he had been completely blinded by her polished facade. He didn't shout anymore. His voice dropped to a cold, dangerous register that made the hair on the back of Vanessa’s neck stand up.

"Pack your things," Luca said quietly.

Vanessa stared at him, stunned. "What?"

"You heard me. You are leaving this house today."

"You're throwing me out? Over this brat?" Vanessa shrieked, losing all composure. "You'll ruin everything! People will talk! The press will have a field day!"

May you like

"Let them talk," Luca replied, turning his back on her. "Because the moment you tried to make my daughter invisible in her own home, you signed your eviction notice."

As Vanessa stormed out of the sunroom, screaming threats about retaliation and social ruin, Luca collapsed into a velvet armchair, burying his face in his hands. He had spent his entire life protecting his empire from external enemies, never realizing that the most dangerous threat had slipped right through his front gates.
