Chapter 5 - Shadows at the Gates

While peace slowly returned to the Moretti household, the outside world was not so forgiving. Vanessa Bellini was not a woman who accepted defeat quietly. Coming from old money and powerful political connections, she viewed her public dumping as an unforgivable humiliation—one that demanded retaliation.
Three days after the breakup, legal notices began arriving at Luca’s downtown office. Vanessa’s high-priced legal team filed multi-million-dollar breach-of-contract lawsuits, claiming emotional distress, reputational damage, and compensation for time invested in the high-society wedding planning. Simultaneously, scandalous anonymous tips began leaking to Chicago tabloids, painting Luca Moretti as an unstable, aggressive mobster who was unfit for custody of a disabled child.
Claire noticed the shift first through the delivery gates. Reporters began lingering at the end of the long, tree-lined driveway, snapping photos of the estate gates and harassing staff members as they ran errands in town.
One afternoon, while Isabella was practicing her piano lessons in the grand salon, a sharp knock echoed through the front entrance. Claire answered the door to find two men in sharp gray suits flashing official-looking badges and legal documentation.
"We’re here on behalf of Miss Vanessa Bellini," the lead attorney stated smoothly, pushing past Claire into the foyer. "We have court-mandated welfare assessment papers regarding the minor child, Isabella Moretti. Given recent volatility reported within this household, an independent evaluation has been ordered."
Luca strode into the hallway before Claire could respond. His eyes narrowed as he looked at the legal papers held out toward him. The presence of these corporate sharks inside his home felt like an invasion.
"You have twenty seconds to get off my property before my security detail removes you," Luca said, his voice dropping into a lethal, low register.
"Mr. Moretti, obstruction of a court-ordered welfare inquiry is a federal offense," the lawyer replied, though he instinctively took a step back under Luca's intimidating gaze. "Miss Bellini is prepared to petition Family Court for emergency guardianship review, citing an unsafe and psychologically damaging environment for a deaf minor under your sole care."
Hearing the raised voices, Isabella wandered out from the salon, her hands tucked nervously behind her back. Seeing the strange men in suits and her father's rigid posture, she froze, fear instantly creeping back into her blue eyes.
Luca saw her. In an instant, the cold syndicate boss vanished, replaced entirely by a protective father. He stepped in front of Isabella, blocking the lawyers' view, and snatched the papers right out of the man's hand.

"Tell Vanessa that if she ever sends her lapdogs to my front door again, she won't have to worry about lawsuits—she’ll be worrying about a restraining order enforced by federal marshals," Luca snarled, ripping the documents in half and dropping them onto the marble floor. "Get out."
As the lawyers scrambled toward the exit, realizing they had pushed their luck too far, Luca knelt down beside his daughter, signing rapidly to calm her racing heart. You're okay, Peanut. They are gone. Nobody is taking you anywhere.
