Chapter 7 - The Counter-Strike

Two days later, the emergency family court hearing took place in downtown Chicago. Vanessa Bellini arrived surrounded by high-priced defense attorneys and flashbulbs popping from reporters outside the courthouse steps. She wore a tailored black mourning dress, playing the part of the heartbroken, misunderstood fiancée discarded by a dangerous mobster.

Inside the oak-paneled courtroom, Judge Harrison presided over the preliminary injunction. Vanessa’s lead counsel stood up, delivering a polished, dramatic speech about the welfare of a vulnerable child trapped in an isolated environment, demanding temporary custody evaluation and a freeze on Moretti assets related to the household.

Luca sat quietly at the defense table, his expression completely unreadable. Beside him sat Claire, holding a secure encrypted hard drive.

When Vanessa’s attorney rested his case, Judge Harrison looked over his spectacles at Luca. "Mr. Moretti, your legal counsel has submitted an emergency counter-motion for defamation, harassment, and harassment injunction. You have the floor."

Luca stood up, towering over the courtroom. Instead of speaking himself, he nodded toward Claire, who stepped up to the digital media podium with the court-approved technical clearance.

"Your Honor," Claire’s clear, steady voice echoed through the silent room. "We submit into evidence authenticated audio-visual archives from the Moretti estate security system, cataloging systematic psychological intimidation, emotional abuse, and deliberate isolation of a minor by the plaintiff, Vanessa Bellini."

Before Vanessa’s lawyers could object, the courtroom speakers crackled to life.

The crystal-clear audio of Vanessa’s voice filled the quiet room."She says Daddy is tired of having a deaf daughter...""You need to learn to be normal before the wedding...""If you keep interfering, I'll find another housekeeper..."

Vanessa’s carefully constructed mask shattered instantly. Her face turned chalk white as heads turned in the gallery, whispers breaking out among the attendees and journalists sitting in the back rows. Her attorneys scrambled frantically, whispering objections, but Judge Harrison held up a hand, his face darkening with judicial fury as he listened to the undeniable proof of cruelty directed at a disabled child.

When the final audio clip ended, the courtroom was dead silent.

Judge Harrison looked directly at Vanessa, who was now trembling in her seat. "Miss Bellini," the judge said coldly, "it appears the only volatile, abusive environment in that household was the one you manufactured. Your emergency petition is dismissed with prejudice. Furthermore, any future attempts to harass Mr. Moretti or his daughter will result in immediate criminal contempt charges."

As the gavel slammed down, the flashbulbs outside the courthouse erupted once more—not with sympathy for Vanessa, but with the explosive headlines of her downfall.
