Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Dark

With Vanessa gone, the Moretti mansion underwent a profound, trembling transformation. The heavy, suffocating tension that had choked the hallways for weeks lifted overnight, replaced by an uncertain, fragile quiet. Staff members whispered in corners, marveling at how swiftly the mighty Luca Moretti had dismantled his own engagement over a housekeeper's warning and a nine-year-old’s tears.
In the master suite, Luca spent hours going through financial records, legal documents, and security logs. Vanessa had not just been a fiancée; she had spent months embedding herself into the household operations, subtly restructuring schedules, vetting staff, and quietly isolating Isabella from her therapists and tutors. It was a calculated, patient takeover.
Down the hall, Isabella sat on her bedroom floor, surrounded by sketchpads and colored pencils. For the first time in months, her hands moved freely, sketching wild, energetic lines across the paper without fear of a sudden shadow falling across the doorway.
Claire knocked softly on the open door and stepped inside, holding a tray with a warm cup of cocoa and a plate of shortbread cookies.
Isabella looked up, her blue eyes wide and cautious. She slowly lifted her hands to sign: Are you in trouble too?
Claire offered a gentle, reassuring smile, kneeling down to match the little girl's eye level. She signed back: No, sweetheart. Nobody is in trouble. Your father took care of everything.
Isabella’s lower lip trembled. Is she coming back?
Never, Claire signed firmly, placing a warm hand over Isabella's small fingers. You are safe here. And your dad wants to talk to you whenever you're ready.
That evening, Luca sat on the edge of Isabella’s bed. The room was lit only by a starry night-light casting constellations across the ceiling. He looked exhausted, the dark circles under his eyes a testament to the emotional toll of the past twenty-four hours.
He reached out, his large, tattooed hands moving with deliberate care as he signed: I am so sorry, Peanut.
Isabella looked up at him, her fingers twitching nervously in her lap. You didn't know.
I should have known, Luca signed back, a deep sorrow in his eyes. I was too busy looking at the world outside, thinking I had built a fortress. I forgot that the people inside need protection the most.

The little girl reached out, her small fingers tracing the rough skin of his knuckles—the hands that could crush a rival syndicate boss, yet moved with infinite gentleness when speaking to her. Will you ever find someone else? she signed, her expression heavy with childhood anxiety. Someone who doesn't like my hands?
Luca pulled her into his arms, burying his face in her dark hair. He signed against her palm, ensuring she felt every word: Listen to me, Isabella. Nobody will ever enter this house again who asks you to hide who you are. We are a team. Always.
