Chapter 13 - The Architecture of Betrayal

The air in the foyer was so thick with tension it felt almost solid. I pressed my hands flat against the reinforced glass of the safe room monitor, my breath fogging the surface as I watched the two brothers stand toe-to-toe. Eleven years of grief, lies, and bloodshed had all led to this exact moment.

"You let me mourn you," Gabriel said, his voice dangerously quiet, the calm before an apocalyptic storm. "I carried your casket. I spent a decade honoring your memory, protecting what was left of our family name, while you were hiding in the shadows pulling the strings."

Vincent chuckled, a dry, humorless sound that lacked any warmth. He paced slowly around the perimeter of the foyer, his polished shoes clicking rhythmically against the marble.

"Mourning builds character, Gabriel," Vincent replied smoothly, stopping to pick up a small crystal vase from a side table before casually setting it back down. "And power... power requires sacrifice. You were getting soft. You had the syndicate running like a legitimate corporation, shaking hands with politicians, investing in real estate. We are Morettis. We don't wear suits to boardrooms; we rule from the shadows with blood and iron. Julian understood that. He just lacked the vision to finish the job."

"Julian is dead," Gabriel stated flatly, his hand resting closer to his weapon. "His body is currently cooling in the warehouse district. His little coup is over."

Vincent’s smile widened, though it never reached his cold, dead eyes. "Oh, I know he's dead, dear brother. Do you really think I didn't plan for his failure? Julian was a pawn. A very loud, very arrogant pawn who served his purpose. He kept you busy, he kept Rachel running for her life, and most importantly, he forced you to break every single rule of the syndicate just to protect a woman and a child who didn't belong in our world."

Hearing my name spoken with such casual disdain made my blood boil. I wanted to smash through the glass, to grab Vincent by the throat and make him pay for every tear I had shed over the past three years. But I forced myself to stay still, remembering Lily sleeping soundly just a few feet behind me.

"Leave Rachel and Lily out of this," Gabriel warned, taking a deliberate step forward. "This is between you and me, Vincent. It always was."

"Is it?" Vincent tilted his head, his expression feigning innocence. "Because from where I'm standing, Rachel is the very center of your universe. The sweet little florist who somehow managed to capture the heart of the most ruthless boss in Chicago. Do you really think I didn't watch you two? Do you think I didn't orchestrate her husband’s death all those years ago just to see how you would react?"

Gabriel froze. The color drained entirely from his face, leaving him looking like a marble statue.

"What did you say?" Gabriel whispered, the words barely escaping his lips.

"Oh, come on, Gabriel," Vincent sneered, taking a slow step toward his brother. "Did you really think Thomas’s car accident eleven years ago was just an unfortunate tragedy? He was getting in the way of the expansion plans. He was too honest, too moral to lead the territories the way we needed them run. So I arranged a little brake failure. And when you stepped in to protect his grieving widow—when you made a solemn vow to her husband on his deathbed—you walked right into my trap."

The revelation hit Gabriel like a physical blow. He staggered backward half a step, his chest heaving as the monstrous reality of his brother's betrayal washed over him. Every shred of guilt Gabriel had carried for failing to protect my first husband, every sleepless night he spent wondering if he could have saved Thomas—it was all engineered by the man standing in front of him.

"You killed him," Gabriel said, his voice cracking with a raw, agonizing pain that I had never heard from him before. "He was our blood, Vincent. He was your own flesh and blood."

"In our world, blood is just something you spill to get what you want," Vincent replied coldly, his expression hardening into a mask of pure malice. "And now, little brother, it’s time to settle the score once and for all. You want your family? You want to protect your precious Rachel and her little girl? You're going to have to take them from my cold, dead hands."

Before Gabriel could even draw his weapon, Vincent whistled sharply.

From the shadows of the arched hallway leading to the kitchens, a dozen heavily armed mercenaries stepped into view, their assault rifles raised and trained directly at Gabriel’s chest.

May you like

"Drop the gun, Gabriel," Vincent commanded, his voice echoing through the grand hall. "Or I burn this entire estate to the ground with your new family still inside it."
