Chapter 5 - The Promise Kept

Late that afternoon, the heavy oak door of Daniel’s suite opened, and Gabriel stepped inside.
I was sitting by the window in the sitting room, watching the sun begin to dip below the horizon, casting a warm amber glow over the rolling lawns of the estate. Lily was curled up on the sofa with a stack of picture books Elena had brought up earlier, quietly turning the pages.
When Lily heard the footsteps, her head snapped up.
“Uncle Gabe!” she piped up, scrambling off the sofa and running across the room.
Gabriel dropped to one knee before she even reached him, opening his arms wide. Lily crashed straight into his chest, wrapping her small arms tightly around his neck. Gabriel buried his face in her hair, holding her with a gentleness that contrasted sharply with the lethal reputation he carried across the city.
I stood up slowly, my heart beating a little faster. I could see the subtle signs of exhaustion on his face—the faint shadows under his eyes, the slight tension in his shoulders.
“Is it over?” I asked softly.
Gabriel looked up from Lily, meeting my gaze across the room. He gently set Lily back down on her feet, whispering something to her that made her giggle and run back toward her picture books, before standing up and walking toward me.
“It’s over,” Gabriel said quietly, stopping just inches away. The scent of rain, leather, and city smoke clung to his clothes. “Arthur and Vanessa are gone. The assets they stole have been frozen and recovered. And the council has been informed that anyone who ever tries to touch a member of Daniel’s family will answer directly to me.”
I let out a breath I felt like I’d been holding for three agonizing years. The invisible weight pressing down on my chest finally lifted, leaving a strange, dizzying sense of freedom.
“Thank you, Gabriel,” I whispered, tears pricking the corners of my eyes. “For everything. For finding us. For keeping your promise.”
Gabriel reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently cupping my chin, tilting my face upward so I had no choice but to look into his dark, intense eyes.
“I made a vow to your husband eleven years ago, Rachel,” he said, his voice steady, deep, and filled with a fierce, unwavering devotion. “I swore that as long as I drew breath, his family would never walk alone in the dark. I failed you for three years because of their lies. I will spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to look over your shoulder again.”
“We don’t have anywhere else to go,” I admitted softly, my voice trembling slightly. “Our apartment is gone, my job here as a maid is finished…”
“You aren’t going anywhere,” Gabriel interrupted instantly, a faint, rare smile touching the corners of his lips. “You and Lily are staying right here. Not as guests, and certainly not as servants. You are staying as my family.”
Before I could process the weight of his words, Lily scampered back over to us, holding up one of the picture books.
“Uncle Gabe, can you read this to me?” she asked innocently, holding the book out between us.
Gabriel looked down at her, the hard lines of the syndicate boss melting away completely, replaced by something warm, steady, and eternal. He knelt down once more, scooping Lily up into his arms, and walked over to the sofa, motioning for me to sit beside them.

As I sat down next to the two of them, watching Gabriel open the book and begin reading the first page in a low, gentle voice, the shadows of the past finally faded away. For the first time in three years, I wasn't hiding, I wasn't running, and I wasn't alone.
We were safe. And the future stretched out before us, bright and untouchable, under the unbreakable protection of the man who never forgot a promise.
