Chapter 14 - The Iron Fortress

The red laser sights of a dozen assault rifles danced across Gabriel’s chest like drops of blood. The air in the foyer turned instantly frigid, the silence so heavy you could hear the faint ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the corner.
Gabriel’s fingers hovered over his holster. I watched through the reinforced glass of the safe room, my heart pounding so violently I was certain it would burst through my ribs. One wrong move, one sudden twitch of a finger on a trigger, and everything we had fought for would be reduced to ash.
"Don't do it, Gabriel," I whispered to the empty room, tears streaming down my face as I clutched the edge of the monitor console. "Please... just play his game for now."
Down in the foyer, Gabriel slowly lifted his hands, letting them hover in the air away from his weapons. A dangerous, cold smile touched the corners of his mouth—not a smile of surrender, but the terrifying smile of a predator waiting for the exact right second to strike.
"You always did love an audience, Vincent," Gabriel said, his voice steady and completely devoid of fear. "Bringing an army into my home doesn't make you strong. It just proves you're still the coward who had to hide behind a fake death certificate for eleven years."
Vincent’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, the insult cutting deep through his icy exterior. He stepped closer, raising a hand to signal the mercenaries to hold their fire, though their rifle barrels remained locked on Gabriel’s heart.
"Call it whatever you want, little brother," Vincent hissed, his voice dropping its smooth veneer to reveal the desperate, bitter rage underneath. "At the end of the day, I’m the one standing in your house, holding all the cards. You think you won because you cleared out Julian's men? Julian was just a distraction. While you were playing hero in the warehouses, my elite units secured every perimeter, every exit, every communication line in this entire estate. You're completely cut off."
"Are we?" Gabriel asked softly, raising an eyebrow.
Before Vincent could respond, a deafening explosion rocked the western wing of the mansion.
The shockwave rattled the reinforced glass of my safe room, sending a cloud of white dust billowing from the ceiling vents. Outside, the bright morning sky was suddenly obscured by thick plumes of black smoke billowing from the estate's security gates.
Vincent spun around, his eyes wide with shock as alarms began to blare throughout the sprawling manor. Red emergency lights flickered to life, casting an eerie, blood-red glow over the marble floors.
"What the hell was that?" Vincent roared, whirling back to face his mercenaries. "Secure the perimeter! Check the gates!"
"You forgot one fundamental rule about the Moretti estate, Vincent," Gabriel said, his voice cutting through the chaos like a razor blade. "I didn't spend the last ten years building a home. I built an iron fortress."
Before the mercenaries could react, the heavy oak doors leading from the courtyard blew inward in a shower of splintered wood and flying shrapnel. Through the smoke strode a dozen men in tactical gear, their faces concealed behind matte-black helmets—loyal Moretti enfiltrators who had never abandoned Gabriel, remaining hidden in the deep reserves while the traitors exposed themselves.
"Take them down!" Vincent screamed, drawing his own pistol and firing wildly toward the doorway.
Chaos erupted in the foyer. Gunfire echoed through the halls, deafening and brutal, a symphony of violence that shook the very foundations of the house. Bullets chipped the marble pillars, shattering crystal chandeliers and raining glass down like diamonds.
Through the chaos, Gabriel moved with terrifying speed. He lunged forward, closing the distance between himself and Vincent before his brother could fire a second shot. Gabriel slammed his fist into Vincent’s jaw with a sickening crunch, sending the older brother crashing hard against the grand staircase railing.
"This ends today, Vincent," Gabriel growled, pinning his brother against the wrought-iron banister with a forearm pressed hard against his windpipe.
Vincent coughed, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth, but a twisted, triumphant grin still plastered his face. Even as his enforcers fell one by one to Gabriel’s loyal tactical team, Vincent didn't look like a defeated man.
"You think killing me solves anything, Gabriel?" Vincent choked out, gasping for air beneath his brother's grip. "Look at the security feed... look at the eastern gate monitor."
Gabriel glanced up instinctively at the flickering console, and my breath caught in my throat as I looked through the safe room glass as well.
On the monitor, a second black SUV had smashed through the perimeter wall, and standing beside it, holding a detonator with a blinking red light, was a figure we thought we had gotten rid of for good.

It was Julian Vance’s second-in-command—and he had a direct line to the estate’s primary explosive reserves.
