Chapter 15 - Dawn Over the Lake (Part 2)

The blinking red light on the detonator screen felt like a countdown to oblivion.
Through the monitoring console in the safe room, I watched the mercenary standing beside the shattered eastern gate raise the device high into the air. The black smoke from the earlier explosion rolled across the manicured lawns, mixing with the cold morning mist off Lake Michigan to create an apocalyptic landscape.
"Gabriel!" I screamed, pressing my palms against the reinforced glass, forgetting for a split second that he couldn't hear me through the heavy steel barrier.
Down in the foyer, Gabriel caught sight of the monitor at the exact same moment. His dark eyes hardened into shards of ice. He didn't hesitate. With a brutal, merciless twist of his forearm, he drove his fist directly into Vincent’s temple, knocking his treacherous older brother out cold with a single, devastating blow. Vincent crumpled to the marble floor like a broken puppet.
"Secure him!" Gabriel barked to his remaining tactical enforcers, not even sparing his brother a second glance as he turned and sprinted toward the main control panel near the heavy doors.
On the screen, the mercenary at the gate pressed his thumb down firmly onto the trigger button.
*BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.*
A high-pitched digital alarm shrieked through the estate's intercom system.
"Main vault explosives armed," an automated robotic voice announced through the speakers. "Detonation in thirty seconds."
Thirty seconds. Thirty seconds to stop a blast that would level the entire mansion, bury the safe room beneath tons of concrete and steel, and end everything we had fought so desperately to build.
Gabriel’s fingers flew across the master control console, bypassing firewall after firewall, trying to override the external signal override. His jaw was clenched so tight I could see the muscles twitch in his temples. Sweat beaded on his forehead, mixing with the dust and soot from the hallway firefight.
"Come on... come on," he muttered under his breath, his voice a desperate prayer.
*Twenty seconds.*
Through the security feed, I saw the mercenary at the gate laughing maniacally, turning to jump back into his SUV to make his escape before the blast radius consumed the property.
I turned away from the glass, looking down at Lily. She had finally stirred, blinking her big, innocent eyes open, looking up at me with absolute trust.
"Mommy? Are we playing hide and seek?" she asked softly, rubbing her sleepy eyes.
"Yes, sweetie," I said, forcing a shaking, reassuring smile onto my face as I wrapped my arms tightly around her, shielding her small body with mine. "Just a little longer. Uncle Gabe is going to keep us safe. He always does."
*Ten seconds.*
On the screen, Gabriel slammed his palm down onto the emergency override master switch.
*Five seconds.*
A red light flashed frantically across the console—and then, suddenly, it turned solid, tranquil green.
*Three seconds... two seconds... one second.*
The high-pitched alarm cut off abruptly, replaced by an absolute, profound silence.
On the monitor, the mercenary outside slammed his hand onto the detonator button over and over again, his face twisting in utter confusion and panic as nothing happened. The explosives had been successfully neutralized, disarmed at the absolute final microsecond by the sheer brilliance of the man leading the Moretti empire.
Outside, the tactical team moved in swiftly, surrounding the panicked mercenary and pinning him to the ground before he could draw another weapon.
Inside the grand foyer, Gabriel let out a long, shuddering breath. He leaned his hands against the control console, his shoulders dropping as the monumental weight of the crisis finally lifted off his broad frame. He turned his head slowly toward the safe room, his dark eyes finding the reinforced glass where I stood holding Lily.
He didn't say a word, but the look in his eyes said everything. *We survived.*
With a heavy hiss, the steel door of the safe room slid open, breaking the seal and letting the cool morning air rush back inside. Gabriel stood framed in the doorway, his clothes stained with dust and smoke, his knuckles bruised, but his expression radiant with an overwhelming, fierce devotion.
I stepped out of the safe room, Lily resting safely in my arms, and walked straight into his embrace. Gabriel wrapped his arms around both of us, pulling us so close I could feel the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat against my chest.
"It's over," Gabriel whispered into my hair, his voice thick with emotion. "It’s really over. No more ghosts. No more lies."
We walked out of the library and back into the grand foyer. Vincent’s unconscious body was being hauled away by the tactical enforcers, loaded into a transport vehicle bound for a secure, inescapable holding facility deep beneath the city. The threat was gone. The empire was secure.
Together, the three of us walked up the remaining steps to the front porch just as the sun fully cleared the horizon, bathing the glittering expanse of Lake Michigan in a brilliant, golden light. The shadows had vanished. The nightmare of the past three years was officially behind us.
Gabriel reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently cupping my chin, tilting my face upward so I had no choice but to look straight into his soul.
"You and Lily belong right here," Gabriel said softly, a rare, breathtaking smile touching his lips. "Not as survivors. As my family. Forever."
May you like
I smiled back, tears of pure joy pricking at the corners of my eyes as I leaned into his touch, finally feeling like I was home.
*Or so we thought, completely unaware that miles away, deep in the subterranean tunnels beneath Chicago, a single encrypted backup server had just booted up automatically, transmitting a single file labeled 'The Final Contingency' to an unknown receiver across the ocean.*
