Chapter 18 - The Federal Dragnet

"They're bypassing the main gates," Marcus said, his fingers flying across a ruggedized tablet as security feeds flickered onto the wall-mounted monitors in the study. "They’ve got local law enforcement locked out. This isn't a standard raid, Boss. It’s an extraction team. Someone high up in the Justice Department just greenlit a RICO sweep."

Gabriel didn't hesitate. He turned to me, his hands gripping my arms with an intensity that left no room for argument. "Elena, take Lily through the panic room in the master library. There’s a subterranean rail line that leads two miles north into the old railyard. A car is waiting there with forged passports and enough cash to get you across the Canadian border."

"And you?" I demanded, my voice cracking with rising panic. "Gabriel, I’m not leaving you here to face a federal army alone!"

"If I run with you, they hunt us down before we even hit the state line," Gabriel said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, calm register. "They want me, and they want the girl. If I stay and hold them off, I buy you the time you need to disappear. Marcus will go with you."

"I am not leaving my post, Boss," Marcus interjected instantly, stepping forward, his hand resting on the grip of his Sig Sauer. "If the Feds want this estate, they’re going to have to dig through my grave to get it."

Before Gabriel could argue, the heavy oak front doors of the mansion echoed with a deafening *CRASH*. The reinforced steel-and-wood barrier shuddered as a hydraulic battering ram slammed into it a second time. Wood splintered, bolts sheared, and heavy iron hinges screamed in protest.

"They're breaching," Marcus muttered, leveling his weapon toward the hallway.

Gabriel grabbed my face, pressing a fierce, desperate kiss to my forehead. "Go. Now. Protect our daughter. I will find you. I swear to every demon in hell, I will find you when this is over."

"Gabriel..." Tears streamed down my cheeks, hot and blinding.

"Go, Elena!" he roared, shoving me gently toward the hidden corridor behind the mahogany bookshelf.

I didn't have a choice. I turned and sprinted down the dimly lit hallway toward the sunroom where Lily was waiting, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs. I snatched Lily up into my arms, ignoring her startled cries, and punched the biometric code into the hidden panel behind the antique grandfather clock.

The heavy stone wall slid open with a soft hiss, revealing the dark, descending stairwell of the escape tunnel. As the door began to close behind us, the last thing I saw through the narrow gap was Gabriel standing in the center of the grand foyer, drawing his custom 1911 pistol, his shoulders squared like a general facing an entire firing squad.

*Boom.*

The front doors finally gave way, crashing inward in a shower of splintered timber and dust. Armed men in tactical gear, clad in black body armor and helmets with night-vision rigs, poured into the foyer.

"Federal agents! Down on the ground! Do it now!" a voice bellowed through a megaphone.

Gabriel didn't drop. He didn't blink. He raised his weapon, the silver slide catching the dim light of the chandelier, and fired a warning shot that punched a clean hole through the lead federal agent’s riot shield.

"You're trespassing," Gabriel's voice echoed through the vast hall, cold, steady, and dripping with lethal menace. "And you picked the wrong house."
