Chapter 17 - The Red Wax Seal

The kitchen had gone deathly quiet. Even Lily seemed to sense the sudden shift in the atmosphere, dropping her butter knife with a soft clatter against the porcelain plate and looking up with wide, questioning eyes.

"Mommy? Is something wrong?" Lily asked, her small voice trembling slightly.

I forced a tight, reassuring smile, kneeling beside her chair and smoothing down her blonde curls. "Nothing is wrong, sweetheart. Why don't you go to the sunroom and play with your new porcelain doll that Gabriel bought you? Mommy and Gabriel just have a tiny bit of boring adult paperwork to look over."

Lily nodded, sliding off her chair and skipping out of the room, though she cast a wary glance back at the heavy envelope in Gabriel's hand.

As soon as the glass doors to the sunroom clicked shut, Gabriel tore open the manila envelope. Inside lay a single sheet of heavy, watermark-embossed parchment and a micro-SD card encased in titanium housing.

Gabriel’s eyes scanned the typewritten words. As he read, the color seemed to drain from his face, leaving his skin stretched tight over his prominent cheekbones. His jaw clenched so hard I could hear the faint grinding of his teeth.

"Gabriel? What is it?" I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs. "What does it say?"

He handed the parchment to me. My eyes raced across the text:

*Mr. Vance,*

*It has come to our attention that you have recently consolidated your control over the Chicago shipping lanes under the guise of legitimate enterprise. A commendable achievement. However, the High Council reminds you that assets acquired during your exile—specifically, female dependents and unverified bloodlines—are subject to strict oversight.*

*Three years ago, you faked your departure from the Syndicate to protect a stray maid and her illegitimate child. We looked the other way because it suited our interests at the time. But a king cannot rule with a liability sitting at his right hand. The child, Lily, carries blood that belongs to the Vanguard, not the Vance legacy.*

*You have seventy-two hours to surrender the girl to our courier at the docks. Fail to do so, and the federal indictment files currently sitting on the desk of the U.S. Attorney General—detailing every transaction, every offshore account, and every body buried beneath your foundation—will be made public. Your empire will crumble, and you, the woman, and the child will hang for treason against the Syndicate.*

*Welcome back to the game.*

*— The Council of Nine.*

The paper fluttered from my trembling fingers, landing softly on the gleaming hardwood floor. The room seemed to tilt on its axis. All the warmth, all the safety, all the golden sunlight of the morning evaporated, replaced by a suffocating, icy dread.

"No," I choked out, wrapping my arms around myself as if to hold my shattering pieces together. "No, they can't. They promised... Gabriel, they said we were safe. You said it was over!"

Gabriel was already moving. He crossed the room in two long strides, grabbing me by the shoulders and pulling me flush against his chest. His grip was iron-tight, desperate, and fierce.

"Listen to me, Elena," he commanded, his voice shaking with a fury I had never heard before—a cold, terrifying rage that could tear mountains apart. "Look at me."

I forced my tear-filled eyes up to meet his. They were no longer the eyes of a loving father; they were the eyes of the monster who had once terrorized the entire underworld.

"I built this city from the ash, and I will burn it to the ground a second time before I let anyone touch a single hair on that little girl's head," Gabriel growled, his voice vibrating through my whole body. "They want a war? I’ll give them a war that will make the last three years look like a Sunday picnic."

"Boss," Marcus interrupted, stepping forward with his phone pressed to his ear. His face was pale. "We just got a ping from the perimeter security grid. Federal black-and-whites are turning onto our private drive. Three cruisers, unmarked vans. They’re moving fast. They have a federal warrant signed by a judge out of Washington."

Gabriel’s eyes flashed with a lethal brilliance. "They didn't wait seventy-two hours."
