Chapter 14 - Shadows at the Gate

Back at the Moretti estate, midnight had settled over the snow-dusted cliffs of upstate New York, blanketing the twenty-thousand-square-foot fortress in a deep, peaceful stillness. Inside the nursery of the west wing, a soft amber nightlight cast a warm glow across the walls. Nora sat comfortably in the plush rocking chair, holding sleeping baby Lily gently against her chest, humming a quiet, melodic lullaby.
The christening had been a resounding success earlier that day, attended by the most powerful capos and loyal allies of the syndicate, all of whom had bowed their heads in genuine respect to the new matriarch of the Moretti family. Even Giovanni had spent hours holding his great-granddaughter, his hard, weathered face softening into expressions of pure grandfatherly joy that no one on the estate had seen in over a decade.
Yet, despite the peace and the warmth of the room, a strange, persistent unease gnawed at the back of Nora's mind.
The heavy oak door to the suite was locked from the inside. Marcus and his elite security detail patrolled the perimeter relentlessly. And yet, she couldn't shake the chilling sensation that the shadows outside the towering glass windows were watching them.
She stood up slowly, cradling Lily against her shoulder, and walked over to the thick velvet curtains. She parted them just an inch, peering out into the moonlit courtyard below.
The expansive stone courtyard was pristine, covered in a fresh layer of powdery snow that reflected the moonlight like a mirror. At first, she saw nothing. Just the towering pine trees swaying gently in the midnight wind and the dark silhouette of the security gates in the distance.
Then, she saw it.
Near the outer perimeter wall, where the dense forest met the estate's private property line, a single dark shadow detached itself from the treeline. It moved with unnatural stealth, darting silently across the moonlit snow toward the lower service entrance—the exact entrance Mrs. Gable and Brody had used to smuggle their illicit operations onto the property months ago.
Nora's breath hitched in her throat. Her heart hammered against her ribs, the trauma of her months as an abused, terrified maid instantly flaring back to life. She clutched baby Lily tighter, taking a sharp, shaky step backward.
*Someone was inside the perimeter.*
She turned quickly toward the heavy mahogany doors, her mind racing. Should she call Marcus? Should she lock herself in the panic room? Before her finger could press the secure intercom button on the wall, the low, mechanical hum of the estate's internal security system chimed softly—a silent, coded alert indicating unauthorized movement in the lower east wing service corridor.
The private phone on the bedside table vibrated aggressively. Nora rushed across the room and snatched the receiver.
"Nora," Marcus's voice came through instantly, tight, low, and laced with suppressed urgency. "Stay inside the suite. Lock the deadbolts. Do not open the door for anyone."
"Marcus, I saw someone outside the perimeter," Nora whispered fiercely, trying to keep her voice steady so she wouldn't wake the sleeping baby in her arms. "They're coming in through the lower service entrance. It's not just a stray animal—it's professional."
"I know, Ms. Bennett," Marcus replied, the sound of a heavy-caliber firearm being racked echoing faintly over the line. "Our perimeter sensors tripped three seconds ago. The intrusion team is small—professionals, not thugs. But they made a fatal miscalculation."
"What miscalculation?" Nora asked, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the phone.
"They think the master of the house is still in Manhattan," Marcus said, a cold, grim edge to his voice. "They don't know that Mr. Moretti's private chopper touched down on the pad five minutes ago."

Before Nora could process the words, a muffled, distant sound echoed through the sprawling stone walls of the mansion—not a gunshot, but the heavy, brutal thud of a slammed door, followed by the unmistakable sound of violent struggle coming from the lower service corridor.
