Chapter 15 - Blood on the Snow

The lower service corridor of the Moretti estate was cast in harsh, flickering emergency lighting. The polished marble floors, usually pristine and gleaming, were suddenly dead silent save for the heavy, ragged breathing of an intruder pinned brutally against the stone wall.
Marcus stood towering over the man, his forearm pressed mercilessly across the intruder's windpipe, pinning him upright while a tactical combat knife was pressed flush against the man's throat. The intruder wore a nondescript tactical black uniform with no insignia, his face hidden beneath a heavy balaclava.
Footsteps echoed rapidly down the corridor.
Lorenzo stepped into the harsh light. He had discarded his suit jacket; his white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing taut, corded muscle. His gray eyes were entirely devoid of human emotion—a terrifying, predatory stillness that signaled a man pushed to the absolute brink of his fury.
"Who sent you?" Lorenzo asked. His voice was dangerously soft, cutting through the corridor like a razor blade.
The intruder choked against Marcus's forearm, his eyes darting frantically around the hallway before fixing on Lorenzo with a defiant glare. He spat a bloody glob onto the marble floor. "Go to hell... Moretti. You think you cleared out the house? You only scratched the—"
*Crack.*
With a swift, practiced motion, Marcus applied sudden pressure, cutting off the man's air supply until his eyes rolled back and he slumped unconscious against the wall, securely zip-tied within seconds.
Lorenzo didn't blink. He pulled a heavy, encrypted satellite phone from his pocket, dialing a single speed-dial number.
"Clean up the trash in the east wing," Lorenzo ordered coldly into the phone. "And trace the encrypted frequency on this operative's comm-link. I want to know every single person involved in this op within the hour."
He hung up and turned around, walking briskly away from the service wing and heading straight up the grand staircase toward the safety of the west wing suite.
When Lorenzo unlocked the heavy double doors of the master suite, he found Nora standing near the center of the room. She was holding baby Lily securely against her chest, her face pale but her eyes burning with a fierce, unbreakable resolve. She wasn't cowering anymore. The frightened, helpless maid was gone forever; in her place stood a woman forged in fire, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the most dangerous syndicate boss on the East Coast.
Lorenzo crossed the room in three long strides, pulling both Nora and his infant daughter into his arms, burying his face in the crook of Nora's neck as he let out a long, shuddering breath.
"Are you okay?" Lorenzo murmured against her skin, his voice thick with an emotion he reserved for no one else in the world. "Did they frighten you?"
"I was never afraid for myself, Lorenzo," Nora whispered softly, resting her cheek against his broad shoulder, feeling the steady warmth of his body. She looked up into his fierce gray eyes with total, unwavering trust. "I knew you'd protect us."
Lorenzo pulled back slightly, his thumb gently caressing her cheek as he looked down at sleeping baby Lily, then back up at the woman who had saved his entire family.
"The intrusion is over," Lorenzo promised quietly, his voice carrying the weight of an unshakeable oath. "The last remnants of our enemies are being hunted down as we speak. From this night forward, no shadow will ever touch this house again."

Nora smiled, leaning up to press her lips softly against his. The winter of their suffering had finally melted away into a terrifying, beautiful, and eternal dawn.
