Chapter 5 - The Awakening

The heavy oak door of Room 4B creaked open.

Giovanni Moretti didn't turn his head immediately. He assumed it was just another cold visit from the harsh winds leaking through the old window frame. But then he heard the heavy, measured footsteps of a man—footsteps he hadn't heard in five agonizing years.

Lorenzo stepped into the room.

The fire Nora had built was still crackling softly, casting a warm, flickering light across the faded wallpaper. Lorenzo stopped dead in his tracks, his breath catching in his throat as he looked at his father.

For the first time since the stroke, Lorenzo truly looked at him. He saw the thin, worn sweater, the cracked lips, the faded blanket—and on the small wooden stool beside the wheelchair, a half-empty bowl of warm soup and a crumpled napkin left behind by Nora.

Shame, hot and burning, rushed through Lorenzo's veins. He had been so obsessed with blood, power, and money that he had allowed the man who gave him everything to rot in a forgotten corner.

Lorenzo slowly walked across the room, falling heavily to his knees beside the wheelchair. The proud, ruthless Mafia Don—a man who made grown men weep with a single word—pressed his forehead against his father's frail, trembling hand.

"I'm sorry, Dad," Lorenzo choked out, his voice cracking with genuine, agonizing remorse. "I'm so damn sorry. I let you down."

Giovanni sat in silence, his heart hammering against his ribs. For five years, his body had been a tomb. But looking at his son—truly seeing the remorse in Lorenzo's eyes—something inside him snapped. A sudden surge of adrenaline, fueled by a lifetime of absolute willpower and a fierce, protective fury, flooded his paralyzed nervous system.

Slowly, agonizingly, Giovanni's fingers twitched.

Lorenzo froze, lifting his head in stunned disbelief.

With a trembling, unnatural effort, Giovanni's hand turned over, his fingers curling around Lorenzo's wrist. It was a weak grip, but to Lorenzo, it felt like a lightning bolt.

Giovanni’s jaw tightened. Saliva gathered in his dry throat, and with a guttural, earth-shattering rasp that sounded like iron grinding against stone, he forced a single word past his lips.

"...Nora..."

Lorenzo stared at him, his eyes wide with shock. "Dad? You spoke... you said a name... Nora?"

Giovanni nodded—a tiny, microscopic movement, but unmistakable. His dark eyes burned with an intense, authoritative fire, communicating a command that brooked no argument. *Find her. Protect her. She is our blood now.*

Before Lorenzo could answer, a soft knock echoed at the door.

The door pushed open slightly, and Nora peeked into the room, holding a fresh pitcher of warm water and a clean towel. She stopped dead, her eyes widening in absolute terror as she saw the head of the Moretti syndicate kneeling beside the old man's wheelchair.

"Mr... Mr. Moretti," Nora stammered, dropping the towel in her panic as she tried to back away. "I'm sorry! I was just bringing water—I didn't mean to intrude—please don't fire me—"

Lorenzo stood up slowly, turning to face her. The terrifying coldness in his gray eyes was completely gone, replaced by a profound, piercing intensity that made Nora's breath catch in her throat.

He took a slow step toward her, his expression unreadable.

"You aren't fired, Nora," Lorenzo said, his voice deep and steady, carrying an unbreakable vow that would change their lives forever. "In fact... you're never cleaning another floor in this house again."
