Chapter 3 - Whispers in the Dark

Downstairs, in the master study, the atmosphere was as sharp as a razor blade.
Lorenzo Moretti sat behind a massive mahogany desk, the glow of a single brass desk lamp illuminating the financial ledgers and weapons shipment reports spread out before him. The storm outside battered the reinforced glass, but inside, the only sound was the rhythmic ticking of an antique grandfather clock.
A sharp knock broke the silence.
"Enter," Lorenzo commanded without looking up.
The heavy door creaked open, and Marcus, Lorenzo's head of security and most trusted confidant, stepped inside. Marcus was a mountain of a man with a broken nose and cold, calculating eyes that missed nothing. He locked the door behind him before walking over to the desk.
"Boss," Marcus said quietly, leaning down slightly. "We've run background checks on the new estate staff, just like you ordered before we left Manhattan. Most of them check out. Low-level agency hires, local kids, domestic help looking for winter work."
Lorenzo finally looked up, resting his chin on his interlaced fingers. His gray eyes narrowed. "Most? That implies someone caught your attention."
"Mrs. Gable, for one," Marcus said, his tone flat. "She's been skimming off the estate maintenance budget for the last three years. Not a massive amount, maybe fifty grand total, but she’s running this place like a petty dictator. The staff is terrified of her."
Lorenzo let out a cold, humorless chuckle. "Mrs. Gable has been with my family since my mother was alive. Let her steal her pocket change, as long as the house runs smoothly and my father is well-cared for."
Marcus hesitated, a flicker of hesitation crossing his rugged face. "About your father, boss..."
Lorenzo's expression hardened instantly, the casual amusement vanishing from his face. "What about him?"
"We spoke to the local doctor who makes the monthly house calls," Marcus said carefully, choosing his words with extreme caution. "He mentioned something off the record. He hasn't been allowed inside Room 4B in over four months. Mrs. Gable always intercepts him at the door, hands him a pre-written health log, and signs off on it herself."
The temperature in the study seemed to drop ten degrees. Lorenzo stood up slowly, his towering frame casting a long, menacing shadow across the bookshelves. "Are you telling me my father's medical care has been left in the hands of a corrupt housekeeper?"
"I'm telling you that no one on the staff—except for one person—actually goes into that east wing," Marcus corrected.
Lorenzo stared at him, his gray eyes flashing with dangerous intensity. "Who?"
"A young maid. Twenty-three years old. Name's Nora Bennett," Marcus replied, laying a thin manila folder on the desk. "She was hired three months ago from a temp agency in Albany. She's six months pregnant, desperate for cash, and living on the absolute poverty line. According to the kitchen staff, she’s the only one who regularly brings food up to your father. But Mrs. Gable treats her like dirt, forces her to do the heaviest labor in the house, and threatens to fire her every single day."
Lorenzo opened the folder, scanning Nora’s employment application. A grainy photograph stared back at him—a young woman with tired eyes, soft features, and an expression of quiet, unyielding resilience.
"She spends time with him?" Lorenzo asked, his voice deathly quiet.
"Every single day," Marcus confirmed. "While everyone else treats your father like furniture, she talks to him. Brings him extra blankets, steals warm food from the kitchen when Gable isn't looking. The other maids make fun of her behind her back, call her soft, but she hasn't missed a single day."
Lorenzo closed the folder with a sharp snap. The idea of anyone disrespecting or neglecting his father in the Moretti home was an unforgivable sin punishable by death. For years, Lorenzo had trusted the household staff to maintain the dignity of the family name while he managed the syndicate's bloody expansion in the city. He had assumed his father was being treated like a king, shielded from the cruelties of the world.
Instead, his father had been rotting in an ignored room, saved from utter degradation only by a desperate, pregnant girl working herself to the bone.

"Get Mrs. Gable," Lorenzo said softly, his voice carrying a deadly, lethal promise. "Bring her to my study right now."
