Chapter 7 - The Secret Ledger

While the snow continued to howl against the reinforced glass of the Moretti estate, the interior of the mansion was undergoing a violent, thorough cleansing. Under Lorenzo's direct orders, Marcus and his security team moved through the sprawling twenty-thousand-square-foot fortress like a surgical blade, weeding out every trace of corruption, theft, and cruelty that Mrs. Gable had cultivated over the past decade.
In the newly appointed west wing suite, Nora sat in front of a massive vanity mirror, staring at her reflection in utter disbelief. The room was larger than her entire damp apartment in the city, decorated in rich velvet, polished mahogany, and warm gold accents. A king-sized bed with silk sheets dominated the center of the room, and a private en-suite bathroom featured a deep marble soaking tub that smelled faintly of eucalyptus and lavender.
A knock sounded at the heavy double doors.
"Come in," Nora said softly, clutching a soft silk robe around her shoulders.
The door clicked open, and Marcus stepped inside, carrying a heavy leather-bound ledger under one arm and a sleek black tablet in his hand. He gave her a polite, respectful nod—a stark contrast to the dismissive glares she used to receive from the senior staff.
"Evening, Ms. Bennett," Marcus said, his deep voice echoing slightly in the vast room. "I hope the accommodations are to your liking. If you need anything changed, the new domestic crew is at your absolute disposal."
"Oh, no, it's... it's too much," Nora stammered, standing up quickly, though Marcus immediately gestured for her to sit back down. "Please, Mr. Marcus, I'm just a maid. I can clean my own room, I don't need—"
"You are no longer a maid, Ms. Bennett," Marcus interrupted gently, setting the leather ledger down on the mahogany desk. "And what I have here concerns you, the estate, and your future."
Nora approached the desk hesitantly, looking down at the worn leather book. "What is that?"
"This," Marcus said, flipping the cover open to reveal columns of neat handwriting mixed with bank routing numbers and receipt stubs, "is Mrs. Gable's personal accounting book. When we cleared out her quarters downstairs, we found it hidden beneath the floorboards."
Nora's breath hitched. "Accounting? I thought she just managed the staff."
"She managed a lot more than that," Marcus said, his cold eyes narrowing slightly. "For the past five years, while Mr. Moretti Sr. was incapacitated, Gable and a few corrupt associates embezzled nearly two million dollars from the estate's maintenance funds. But that's not the interesting part."
He slid the ledger toward Nora, pointing a gloved finger at a specific page near the back.
Nora leaned in, scanning the neat rows of text until her eyes landed on a name that made her blood run cold.
*Brody Vance.*
"Read the notes beside the name," Marcus instructed quietly.
Nora's hands began to shake as she read the handwritten entries. There, detailed in Gable's sharp, precise cursive, were regular payouts made to Brody over the past eight months. Thousands of dollars funneled from estate accounts straight into her deadbeat ex-boyfriend's underground gambling debts.
"Brody didn't just abandon you and run up debts by accident, Ms. Bennett," Marcus revealed, his voice steady and clinical. "He was working with Gable's nephew. They were using your relationship to plant an insider inside the estate, hoping to quietly steal high-value antiques and art pieces from the east wing while everyone else looked away. When you got pregnant and refused to steal for them, Brody cut ties and Gable assigned you to the worst chores, hoping the physical strain would force you to quit and leave quietly without asking questions."
The room seemed to spin around Nora. The man she had loved, the father of her unborn child, hadn't just been a reckless gambler—he had been a pawn in a criminal conspiracy, and she had been nothing more than a disposable tool in their hands. A sob caught in her throat, and her knees buckled.
Before she could hit the floor, Marcus caught her elbow with steady, practiced ease, guiding her into a nearby armchair.
"Breathe, Ms. Bennett," Marcus said firmly. "The threat is neutralized. Gable is out in the cold, her network has been dismantled, and Brody... well, Brody's current whereabouts are being investigated by our New York division as we speak. No one who has ever harmed or manipulated you will ever walk free."
Nora stared blankly at the leather ledger, the raw betrayal burning away the last remnants of her old, timid self. For six months, she had blamed herself. She had believed she was weak, worthless, and destined for a life of misery on the freezing streets. But looking at the cold, hard proof of their corruption, something inside Nora shifted. A quiet, unyielding strength took root beneath her ribs, mirroring the steady heartbeat of the child growing inside her.
"What happens to Brody?" Nora asked, her voice dropping to a dangerous, steady whisper that surprised even Marcus.
Marcus paused for a fraction of a second, a faint, approving smirk touching the corner of his broken nose. "Let's just say, Ms. Bennett, that when the Moretti family collects a debt, they collect in full. He will never bother you again."
Just then, the heavy doors opened further, and Lorenzo stepped into the suite. He took in the scene: Nora sitting in the armchair with her pale face and determined eyes, and Marcus standing beside the open ledger.
Lorenzo walked over, glancing down at the book before meeting Nora's gaze. "Marcus filled you in?"
Nora looked up at the syndicate boss, her eyes flashing with a sudden, fierce pride. She didn't cower. She didn't apologize. She stood up slowly, clutching the silk robe around her.
"They used me," Nora said, her voice clear and strong. "They used me, and they thought I was too weak to fight back."
Lorenzo stared at her for a long moment, the ghost of a true smile touching his handsome face—the first genuine smile he had worn in five long years.

"They made a fatal mistake," Lorenzo replied softly, stepping closer to her. "And in this family, we make sure mistakes are never repeated. Get some rest, Nora. Tomorrow, the storm clears, and we begin a new chapter."
