Chapter 9 - Reckoning in the Foyer

The grand foyer of the Moretti estate was bathed in the harsh, cold morning light pouring through the towering two-story glass windows. The polished Italian marble floors gleamed like mirrors, reflecting the massive crystal chandelier overhead.

Brody Vance stood in the center of the vast room, shivering slightly despite his leather jacket. His hair was messy, his eyes darting nervously around the opulent halls as two towering Moretti bodyguards stood on either side of him, their hands resting ominously near their holstered sidearms. Brody had spent the last twenty-four hours panicking after discovering Mrs. Gable’s accounts were frozen and his regular cash flow had vanished. Desperate and arrogant, he had hiked up the snowy mountain road, assuming he could easily bully Nora into submission just like he had back in the city.

"I'm telling you, you've got the wrong idea!" Brody snapped at the guards, trying to maintain a brave front as he paced across the marble floor. "Nora works here! She's my fiancée, and she's carrying my kid! You guys have no right locking her up in this rich-guy cult—let me talk to her right now, or I'll call the cops!"

"Call the cops?"

A cold, deep voice echoed down the grand staircase, cutting through Brody's complaints like a razor.

Brody spun around, his arrogant expression faltering the second he laid eyes on Lorenzo Moretti descending the steps. Lorenzo moved with the effortless, predatory grace of a apex predator, dressed impeccably in a tailored charcoal suit, his piercing gray eyes fixed entirely on the shivering man below.

"M-Mr. Moretti?" Brody stammered, swallowing hard as he recognized the face from high-profile financial magazines and underground syndicate rumors. "Look, sir, there's been some kind of mistake. I'm just here for my girl, Nora. She's got a habit of running off—"

"Your girl?" Lorenzo interrupted, stepping off the bottom stair and closing the distance between them with slow, deliberate strides.

Before Brody could respond, Lorenzo closed the remaining distance and struck him across the face with the back of his hand. The crack of flesh on flesh echoed sharply through the cavernous foyer. Brody stumbled backward, crashing hard onto the pristine marble floor, clutching his bleeding lip with a terrified yelp.

"You don't get to call her that," Lorenzo said, his voice dangerously soft as he towered over the cowering man. "You don't get to say her name. You don't get to look at her."

"What—what did I do?!" Brody cried out, scrambling backward on the floor until his back hit the base of a marble pillar. "She's pregnant with my baby! She's mine!"

"She was nothing to you except a tool for your thefts and a punching bag for your gambling debts," Lorenzo snarled, signaling to Marcus, who stepped forward and dropped a heavy leather binder onto the floor right in front of Brody's face.

Brody's eyes widened in sheer terror as he recognized Gable's handwriting and the financial records detailing every illegal payout, every smuggled asset, and every coordinated conspiracy between the corrupt housekeeper and his own underground gambling ring.

"Gable is gone," Lorenzo stated, his voice dropping to a sinister, chilling register. "Her network is dismantled. And you... you thought you could use my estate as a piggy bank while abusing an innocent woman under my roof."

"I didn't know!" Brody shrieked, tears of sheer panic streaming down his face as he pressed his hands against the marble floor. "Please! Don't kill me! I'll leave town! I'll never come back! I swear to God—"

"Kill you?" Lorenzo let out a cold, humorless laugh. "That would be too clean. You're going to wish you were dead before this is over."

Lorenzo signaled to Marcus and the bodyguards. "Take him down to the lower holding cells. Strip him of every dime, every phone, every scrap of identification he has. Then, when the snowplows clear the mountain pass tonight, dump him on the interstate fifty miles outside the city with the clothes on his back and his gambling debts following him every step of the way. If he ever sets foot in this county again, feed him to the river."

"No! Please! Nora! Help me! Nora!" Brody screamed hysterically as the two massive guards hauled him up by his arms, dragging his thrashing body across the marble floor toward the service elevators.

His desperate screams faded into the depths of the mansion as the heavy steel doors slid shut.

From the top of the grand staircase, standing quietly in the shadows of the west wing corridor, Nora watched the entire scene unfold. She didn't feel fear. She didn't feel pity. For the first time in her life, she felt the crushing weight of her past lift entirely off her shoulders.

Lorenzo turned slowly, looking up the grand staircase. His harsh, terrifying expression melted away the second his eyes met hers, replaced by a deep, unwavering tenderness. He climbed the stairs slowly, stopping a few steps below her.

"It's over, Nora," Lorenzo said softly, his voice steady and warm. "He's gone. He's never coming back."

Nora looked down at the man who had torn down an empire of corruption just to protect her and her unborn child. She took a deep breath, resting her hands gently against her swollen belly, knowing that the nightmare was finally, truly over.
