Chapter 13 - The Inheritance of Sins

The air in the office seemed to drop ten degrees. I didn't touch the folder immediately; I kept my eyes locked on Clara, measuring her pulse, watching the micro-twitches in her facial muscles. In intelligence work, you learn to spot a bluff within three seconds. Clara wasn't bluffing. She was terrified, and terror made people dangerous.
"Define 'dangerous'," I said, my voice dropping into that cold, level register that usually made grown men back away.
"Sit down, Christian, and open the damn file before you play the tough guy," Clara snapped, her composure cracking just enough to reveal genuine panic. She pulled out a chair uninvited and sat down, clutching her silver-headed cane tightly. "Your mother and Ryan weren't just petty thieves who wanted to ruin your marriage out of spite. That was just the warm-up act. They needed Emily out of the picture, and they needed you financially ruined, because they were preparing for a payout that required a completely clean, isolated target."
I slowly reached out, slid the manila folder toward me, and flipped it open.
Inside were yellowed newspaper clippings from thirty years ago, financial ledgers stamped with the seal of a Swiss bank that no longer existed, and a series of high-resolution photographs of a property I had never seen before—an sprawling estate nestled deep in the mist-shrouded forests of the Pacific Northwest, registered under an obscure shell corporation.
"The Blackwood Trust," I read aloud, my eyes scanning the names on the ledger. "I thought this was liquidated after my grandfather died."
"Your grandfather didn't die of a heart attack, Christian," Clara said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Eleanor poisoned his medicine. She wanted control of the Blackwood assets before the true heir—the child of the sister they exiled—could claim them. And guess who that heir is?"
I looked up sharply. "Me?"
"No," Clara laughed, a bitter, rattling sound. "Not you. *Emily.*"
The room seemed to spin on its axis. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. "What did you just say?"
"Think about it, you fool," Clara hissed, leaning forward. "Why do you think Eleanor targeted Emily from the very beginning? Why did she plant her in your life, orchestrate the fake betrayal, and try to break her spirit so thoroughly? It wasn't just garden-variety mother-in-law hatred. Eleanor found out three years before you deployed that Emily’s birth mother was the rightful heiress to the Blackwood estate—an estate worth upwards of two hundred million dollars. If you and Emily stayed married, the inheritance would legally pass to your household. Eleanor wanted to destroy Emily psychologically, force a bitter divorce, and have Ryan swoop in as the 'savior' to secure the proxy rights to the trust."
The pieces of the puzzle slammed together in my mind with deafening force. The strange paperwork Emily’s mother had left behind before she died; the odd obsession my mother had with our marriage license; the specific, calculated nature of the abuse and blackmail Emily had endured while I was away. It wasn't random cruelty. It was a corporate-level hostile takeover disguised as a family feud.
"If Eleanor and Ryan are in federal prison," I said slowly, the blood roaring in my ears, "then who is executing the final transfer of the trust?"

Before Clara could answer, the glass door of my office shattered inward in a shower of lethal crystals.
