Chapter 2 - The Trap Is Set

The tension in the hallway was thick enough to choke on. Ryan glanced at Eleanor, his confident smirk dimming just a fraction at the utter calm on my face. He wasn't used to me being silent. Growing up, I was the protective older brother who took the fall for his mistakes, the dutiful son who tried to earn a bitter mother's approval. But the man standing in front of them now was not the boy they remembered.

“Who was that on the phone?” Eleanor demanded, taking a step into the room, her high heels clicking sharply against the floorboards. “Don't play mind games with me, Daniel. I am your mother. Everything I did was to secure this family's future from an outsider who didn't deserve a cent of your father's legacy.”

“An outsider?” I repeated quietly, leaning back against the doorframe. “You mean my wife? The woman who stayed by my side while you spent five years in gambling dens in Atlantic City?”

Eleanor’s face flushed a deep, mottled red. “How dare you! I gave you life!”

“And you sold it off the second you saw dollar signs,” I replied smoothly. I turned toward Emily, who was watching us with wide, terrified eyes. “Em, can you stand?”

She nodded weakly, clutching the blanket around her shoulders. I walked over, scooped her up effortlessly into my arms, and pulled her close. She buried her face into the crook of my neck, her whole frame trembling, but I could feel her holding on for dear life.

“What do you think you’re doing?” Ryan snapped, blocking the exit. “You can’t take her anywhere. And you’re not taking anything out of this house. This house belongs to Vanguard Holdings LLC now. My company.”

I looked Ryan up and down. My younger brother had never worked a hard day in his life. He wore tailored suits paid for by my deployment checks and drove sports cars leased under credit cards I had mistakenly co-signed when I was younger.

“Out of my way, Ryan,” I said softly.

“Or what?” Ryan taunted, stepping closer until his chest was inches from mine. “You gonna hit me, hero? Go ahead. I’ll call the cops and have you thrown in a cell before your duffel bags even hit the porch.”

I didn't waste energy arguing. Instead, I shifted Emily’s weight, brought my foot up, and kicked the side of his knee with surgical precision. It wasn't a military strike meant to shatter bone, but it hit the nerve right where it hurt most.

Ryan let out a high-pitched yelp and collapsed sideways into the drywall, leaving a crack in the plaster as he slid to the floor, clutching his leg.

“Ryan!” Eleanor screamed, rushing to his side. “You animal! You assaulted your own brother!”

“He blocked my egress,” I said coolly, stepping over Ryan’s outstretched legs. “Tell him he’s lucky I’m off duty.”

I carried Emily down the stairs, ignoring my mother’s shrieks echoing behind us. I carried her out to the dark driveway where my rented black SUV was idling. I placed her carefully in the passenger seat, buckled her in, and locked the doors.

As I walked around to the driver's side, my phone buzzed. It was Marcus.

“Daniel,” Marcus’s voice crackled through the Bluetooth speaker as I started the engine. “I’ve already initiated the preliminary freezes. The federal oversight team at the Department of Defense Special Assets Division has been notified. Because your father’s inheritance was structured under the Defense Security Trust Act due to your clearance level, your family didn't just commit civil fraud—they committed an offense involving federal military assets.”

“How fast will the freezes take effect?” I asked, pulling out of the driveway into the rainy night.

“The bank accounts are already locked,” Marcus replied with a low chuckle. “As of four minutes ago, every card tied to your mother and brother's names has been declined. The real estate transfer they executed with that corrupt notary? The county recorder’s office just received a federal injunction. They can’t sell, mortgage, or step foot on that property legally after 6:00 AM tomorrow.”

In the passenger seat, Emily let out a soft breath, her hand reaching out to touch my arm. “Daniel... they had help. It wasn't just your mother and Ryan. There’s a man... a lawyer named Vance. He came to the house with armed men. They made me sign those papers on the dining room table while Ryan watched.”

My eyes narrowed as I looked at the dark highway ahead. Marcus Vance. He was a notorious local fixer—a dirty attorney known for helping wealthy criminals wash illicit money and seize contested assets through forged paperwork and intimidation.

“Marcus Vance,” I repeated out loud.

On the phone, my attorney scoffed. “Vance? He’s been on the feds' radar for two years. If he touched this deal, he just walked himself right into a trap wire.”

“Good,” I said, my grip tightening on the steering wheel. “Tell the federal team to hold off on arresting Vance until tomorrow morning. I want him to show up at the house thinking he’s collecting his cut.”

“What are you going to do, Daniel?” Marcus asked, a note of caution in his voice.

“I’m going to make sure they all gather in one room,” I answered, staring cold into the rearview mirror. “And then I’m going to pull the rug out from under their feet.”
