Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Web

Within two hours, the house was quiet again.

Eleanor, Ryan, and Marcus Vance had been loaded into federal vans and driven straight to the regional detention facility in downtown Chicago. The house, which had felt like a battlefield just hours before, was now being searched by evidence techs cataloging every document Vance had brought with him.

I sat on the front porch, holding a steaming paper cup of black coffee. Marcus, my attorney, walked out of the front door and sat beside me on the wooden bench.

“They’re in deep, Daniel,” Marcus said, opening his tablet. “The feds searched Vance’s office an hour ago under a companion warrant. They found offshore bank accounts linked to your mother’s name dating back three years. This wasn't a sudden crime of opportunity. She had been planning to drain your assets the moment you signed your overseas contract.”

I took a slow sip of coffee, staring out over the manicured lawn. “Three years... she started planning this while I was still burying Dad.”

“She used your grief,” Marcus said gently. “She knew you were focused on your service and your father's passing. She thought you’d never look closely at the trust distributions.”

“What about the money?” I asked. “Emily said they took everything.”

Marcus smiled—a sharp, legal smile. “They tried to. But remember the emergency clause we set up? The moment Ryan attempted to wire the three million dollars from your father's trust into his shell company yesterday afternoon, the automated defense flag triggered. The money never left the clearinghouse. It was diverted into a frozen federal holding account. Your mother and Ryan were effectively spending numbers on a screen that didn't exist anymore.”

I let out a long breath, feeling the weight of the last twenty-four hours slowly lift from my shoulders. “And Emily’s name? Is she legally clear?”

“Completely,” Marcus affirmed. “The video footage from your house proves severe duress and physical coercion. Every contract she was forced to sign is null and void. In fact, the federal prosecutor is considering using her testimony as the centerpiece of the extortion charges against Vance. If she agrees to testify, Vance will spend the rest of his natural life behind bars.”

“I won't force her to do anything,” I said immediately. “She’s suffered enough.”

“I understand,” Marcus replied, standing up. “Get some rest, Daniel. The feds will handle the arraignment this afternoon. You need to be with your wife.”

I stood up, threw the empty coffee cup into the trash, and walked toward my SUV. The nightmare at the house was over, but the real work—healing the damage done to Emily—was just beginning.
