Chapter 20 - The Unseen Envelope

The sun was setting over the rolling green hills of our estate, painting the western sky in brilliant shades of violet and gold. Lily was laughing hysterically as she chased our golden retriever across the manicured lawn, her bright yellow dress fluttering in the gentle evening breeze.
Emily and I sat side by side on the wide wooden porch, sharing a glass of sweet lemonade, the warmth of the fading day washing over us like a blessing. The nightmares of the past week—the glass shattering in my office, the rain-slicked confrontation in the forest, the flashing sirens of federal marshals—felt like a lifetime away.
"Do you think it's really over?" Emily asked softly, resting her head against my shoulder, her fingers interlaced with mine.
"It's over," I replied, kissing her temple, my arm wrapped securely around her waist. "The accounts are secured, the conspirators are locked away where they can never touch us again, and our family is safe. We won, Em. Completely."
She smiled, closing her eyes and breathing in the peaceful scent of pine and freshly cut grass.
My phone buzzed gently on the small cedar table beside our rocking chairs. I glanced down, expecting another routine legal update from Marcus regarding the final asset transfer of the Blackwood estate. Instead, the screen displayed a push notification from an encrypted, unknown protocol—a digital drop that hadn't passed through our corporate filters.
Frowning, I picked up the phone and tapped the notification to open the file.
It wasn't a legal document. It was a single, high-resolution photograph taken from a vantage point high in the tree line across our property boundary, looking down directly at our porch. In the center of the frame, Lily was laughing as she played with the dog, completely unaware.
Superimposed across the bottom of the image in crisp, digital red text was a single sentence that made the blood instantly freeze in my veins:
May you like
*“You secured the house, Christian... but you forgot to check who held the mortgage on the land.”*
My heart slammed against my ribs. I slowly raised my eyes from the screen, scanning the darkening treeline at the edge of our property as a single, unmarked black sedan crept out of the shadows with its headlights off, slowly rolling to a stop beside our private gate.
