Chapter 25 - The Vault Ambush

"Move, move, move!" I yelled, grabbing Emily's hand and sprinting back toward the southern stairwell as heavy motorized steel blast doors began dropping from the ceiling at both ends of the archive corridor.
The metallic screech of descending security barriers echoed through the underground chamber like the grinding teeth of a monster. We ducked under the closing gap of the primary stairwell door just as it slammed into the concrete floor with a deafening crash, sealing the main exit behind us.
"Alternative route!" Emily panted, checking her tablet as we scrambled up the concrete steps of the stairwell. "The security blueprints show a maintenance shaft on sub-level two that leads to the city's old steam tunnel network. It exits two blocks away near an MTA subway maintenance hatch."
"Lead the way!" I shouted, drawing my sidearm as the echo of heavy boots running down the upper levels of the stairwell reached our ears. Vance's private security team. They hadn't just been guarding the bank; they had been waiting for us. It was a setup from the very beginning.
We burst through the metal door of sub-level two, entering a dark, narrow corridor filled with humming electrical transformers and steaming pipes. The air was thick with humidity and the smell of ozone.
"Down here!" Emily cried, yanking open a heavy iron hatch set into the floor. A steep metal ladder led down into pitch-black darkness.
Without hesitation, I dropped down first, rifle ready, sweeping the dark tunnel below with my tactical flashlight. The beam cut through thick tendrils of steam, revealing a massive brick-lined tunnel dating back to the late nineteenth century.
"Come on, Em!" I called up.
Emily scrambled down the ladder just as the heavy door above us blew open with a deafening crash. Shouts echoed down the stairwell, followed by the terrifying *clack-clack* of assault rifles being unholstered.
"Target sighted in the service tunnel!" a harsh voice barked from above. "Open fire!"
*Bang! Bang! Bang!*
Bullets ricocheted off the brick walls and metal pipes around us, screaming into the darkness with lethal energy. A shower of sparks rained down over the ladder as Emily dropped the final three feet onto the tunnel floor, stumbling into my arms.
"Run!" I roared, grabbing her hand and sprinting down the damp, winding steam tunnel into the pitch blackness, our flashlights bouncing wildly off the ancient brickwork.
We ran blindly through the labyrinth of subterranean conduits, the shouts of our pursuers fading into the distance as we took a sharp left turn through a rusted maintenance gate. I slammed the iron gate shut behind us and threw a heavy padlock through the latch, snapping it securely into place.
Leaning against the damp brick wall, both of us gasping for air, I pulled the manila folder from inside my jacket. It was slightly crumpled, but intact.
Emily wiped a smear of soot from her forehead, laughing breathlessly, a mixture of adrenaline and sheer terror dancing in her eyes. "Did we... did we actually get it?"
May you like
I held up the folder, a grim smile touching the corners of my mouth. "We got it. Now let's go deliver a very expensive surprise to Mr. Julian Vance."
