Chapter 4 - Ambush at Sunrise

The heavy wooden doors swung open, hitting the interior wall with a loud bang that echoed through the marble entryway.

The laughter in the dining room died instantly.

My mother, Eleanor, stood at the head of the long mahogany table, a crystal glass of champagne raised in her hand. Ryan was seated to her right, stuffing a piece of expensive pastry into his mouth. Sitting across from them was Marcus Vance, his briefcase open on the table, surrounded by legal deeds, financial transfers, and cash bundles.

When Eleanor saw me walk in, flanked by four armed federal agents in tactical vests, her face went completely pale. The champagne glass slipped from her hand, crashing onto the hardwood floor and shattering into dozens of pieces.

“Daniel?” she gasped, her voice trembling. “What... what is the meaning of this? Why are these men in my house?!”

“Your house?” I asked, stepping into the dining room. “Check the clock, Mom. It’s 6:01 AM.”

Ryan jumped out of his chair, his face contorted with rage. “I told you to get lost last night, Daniel! I own this property! I have the signed title right here! Call the police, Vance! Have these fake cops thrown out!”

Marcus Vance didn't move. His eyes were fixed on the federal badges pinned to the chest of the lead agent. Unlike my idiot brother and manipulative mother, Vance knew exactly what those badges meant.

“Shut up, Ryan,” Vance muttered under his breath, his hands slowly moving away from the table.

“Excuse me?!” Eleanor shrieked, glaring at Vance. “We paid you five hundred thousand dollars to secure these deeds! Fix this!”

The lead agent, Special Agent Harrison, stepped forward, pulling a thick packet of federal warrants from his jacket.

“Eleanor Vance, Ryan Vance, and Marcus Vance. You are all under federal custody,” Harrison announced in a booming, unyielding tone. “You are being charged with federal wire fraud, extortion, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, and violations under the Defense Security Trust Protection Act.”

“This is a mistake!” Ryan shouted, stepping back toward the glass patio doors. “I didn't sign anything illegal! She signed it! Emily signed everything willingly! We have video of her signing it!”

“You mean the video where you held her against her will while two of Vance’s thugs stood off-camera with weapons?” I said, stepping right up to Ryan.

Ryan’s eyes darted around the room like a trapped animal. “You can’t prove that!”

“Actually, we can,” I replied smoothly. “Did you really think I’d leave my wife in this house for twelve months without a secondary security network?”

I reached into my pocket, pulled out a small remote control, and pressed the center button.

From the crown molding in four corners of the dining room, small red lights blinked to life. High-definition pinhole cameras, installed long before my deployment for high-clearance security, began humming softly.

Vance dropped his head into his hands with a heavy groan. “You idiot...” he whispered to Ryan. “You told me the house was clear.”

“Every threat,” I said, staring into my mother's terrified eyes, “every strike, every forced signature, and every dime you tried to transfer... it was all recorded on a secure military server in real-time. I’ve been watching the logs from my base in Bagram for six months.”

Eleanor sank into her chair, her regal posture collapsing into frail, trembling age. “Daniel... please,” she whimpered, her voice suddenly breaking into pathetic tears. “I’m your mother. I did it for Ryan... he was in debt to dangerous people. I had to save him!”

“You tried to break my wife to save a parasite,” I said coldly. “You sacrificed the only person who actually cared about this family.”

Agent Harrison snapped hand cuffs onto Ryan’s wrists first. Ryan let out a pathetic squeal as his arms were pinned behind his back.

“Get him out of here,” Harrison ordered his men.

As they dragged Ryan past me, he glared at me with pure hatred. “You ruined everything, Daniel! You always were the golden child!”

“No, Ryan,” I said softly. “I was just the soldier. But you forgot what soldiers do when their home is invaded.”
