Chapter 15 - Joan’s Legacy

For the next two months, Brittany stayed at a boutique hotel downtown while Kevin filed for legal separation.
During the crisp spring afternoons, Emily spent her weekends at Joan’s house. Together, they volunteered at the local community soup kitchen, serving warm meals to senior citizens and low-income families.
One Saturday afternoon, as Emily was ladling soup into thick ceramic bowls, she looked over at her grandmother, who was laughing warmly with an elderly veteran at one of the long tables.
"Grandma," Emily said as they wiped down the countertops later that day. "Mom thought those plates were everything. But being here with you... none of that stuff matters, does it?"
Joan washed a stainless steel pot in the deep sink, her hands moving with steady grace.
"Things are just things, Emily," Joan said softly. "A plate is just clay and paint until you put food on it to feed someone you care about. The moment you use it to elevate yourself above someone else, it becomes worthless garbage."

Emily hugged her grandmother tightly. "I'm taking the set to Boston with me in August."
Joan smiled, kissing Emily's forehead. "I know you will, sweetheart. And you'll use them well."
