Chapter 16 - The Breakup

In late May, Kevin met Brittany at a quiet coffee shop neutral ground to finalize their separation agreement.
Brittany looked transformed. The lacquered hair and pristine designer clothes were replaced by a simple trench coat and tired, hollow eyes. The past three months of isolation had stripped away her polished mask.
"Kevin, please," Brittany pleaded quietly, setting her mug down. "We can go to counseling. I made a terrible mistake. I was obsessed with how everything looked to everyone else."
Kevin looked at the woman he had spent nearly two decades trying to please.
"It wasn't just the plates, Brittany," Kevin said gently. "It was the way you made my mother feel. It was the way you made our daughter feel. You built a home where everyone had to earn their seat at the table by being perfect."

"I was wrong," she whispered, a real tear finally slipping down her cheek. "I felt so insecure around your mother. She had this... quiet dignity that I could never buy, no matter how much money I spent on antiques."
Kevin reached across the table and touched her hand briefly. "I hope you find that dignity for yourself, Brittany. But for now, we both need space."
