Chapter 19 - Setting the New Table

Four years later.
In a bright, third-floor apartment in downtown Boston, twenty-two-year-old Emily was setting her dining table for Thanksgiving dinner.
She had just graduated with honors from Boston University and had started her first job at an architecture firm. Her apartment was modest, but filled with warm light and green house plants.
On the long wooden table lay a simple linen runner.
And on top of the runner rested the complete 12-person service of Haviland Limoges, Pattern 1952. The blue forget-me-nots gleamed softly under the warm pendant light, the gold rims untarnished and perfect.
Emily carefully placed the final salad plate down, smiling as she heard footsteps coming up the stairs.
The door opened, and Kevin walked in carrying two heavy grocery bags, followed by Joan, who was now eighty-year-young, leaning comfortably on a wooden cane but smiling brightly.

And behind Joan stepped Brittany.
She looked relaxed, mature, and at peace. Over the last four years, through steady effort and hard work, Brittany had rebuilt a quiet, respectful friendship with Kevin and a deep, healing relationship with her daughter.
