Chapter 20 - A Seat for Everyone

The apartment was filled with the delicious aroma of roasted turkey, sage stuffing, and fresh cranberry sauce.
When it was time to sit down, twelve people filled the apartment dining room—Emily, Joan, Kevin, Brittany, Emily’s college roommates, and a few neighbors who had nowhere else to go for the holiday.
Every single person sat before a pristine, gold-trimmed Haviland Limoges porcelain plate.
Emily stood at the head of the table, filling wine glasses and water tumblers.
Brittany sat near the middle of the table, chatting pleasantly with one of Emily’s roommates, passing the warm rolls with a genuine, unforced smile.
Joan sat at the head of the table opposite Emily. She watched as her son carved the turkey, passing the heavy blue-flowered oval platter around the room.
Before anyone took a bite, Emily raised her glass.
"I want to make a toast," Emily said, looking around the crowded, happy room. "To my Grandma Joan."
Everyone turned toward Joan, raising their glasses.
"Four years ago, Grandma taught me the most important lesson of my life," Emily said, her voice filled with warmth. "She taught me that real elegance isn't about what you own, and real grace isn't about being perfect. It's about making sure that no matter who walks through your door..."
Emily looked over at her mother, Brittany, who met her gaze with a soft, grateful nod and eyes full of tears.

Laughter and clinking glasses filled the room. Joan picked up her fork, looked down at her beautiful porcelain plate, and took a bite of her meal, knowing that the family legacy was finally safe, whole, and right where it belonged.
