Chapter 17 - Brittany’s Reckoning

Summer passed in a blur of quiet reflection.
Living alone in a small one-bedroom apartment near the town center, Brittany hit rock bottom. Without her grand house, her committee posts, or her family hostings, she had to face the reality of who she had become.
She stopped attending the country club functions. She stopped searching for rare collectibles online.
One afternoon in July, while walking through a local thrift store looking for simple kitchen utensils, Brittany stumbled upon a small wooden shelf filled with mismatched glassware.
In the corner sat a plain, five-dollar clear glass juice tumbler—the exact same kind Joan had dropped at Easter a year ago.

Brittany picked up the glass. She held it in her hands, feeling its simple, heavy weight, and finally broke down into quiet, cleansing tears right in the middle of the aisle.
She bought the glass, drove home, and placed it in the middle of her tiny kitchen table as a permanent reminder.
