Chapter 9 - Emily’s Decision

Inside the Oakridge High School library, Emily sat at a corner desk with her laptop open, researching college applications.
Originally, she had planned to attend the state university just forty minutes from home to appease her mother. But over the last five days, watching her father walk on eggshells and her mother obsess over material status, Emily felt a clear resolve taking shape inside her.
Her phone buzzed on the wooden table. It was a text from Joan:
Thinking of you today, sweetheart. Remember that your worth is never decided by the dishes you're handed.
Emily smiled, her fingers flying across the keyboard as she typed a reply:
Thanks Grandma. I just submitted my early application to Boston University today. I'm moving out in the fall.
Emily looked at the screen confirmation. BU was where her grandparents had met in 1954. It was far enough from her mother's suffocating control, but close enough to visit Joan on weekends.
She opened her notebook and looked at the handwritten note Joan had slipped into the china box on Thanksgiving night.

Emily folded the note carefully, placed it inside her wallet, and closed her laptop with complete confidence.
