Chapter 23 - Breach and Clear

The heavy steel access hatch of the limestone silo groaned in protest as Marcus’s hydraulic breaching charge blew the locking mechanism outward in a shower of sparks and pulverized concrete. The deafening concussion wave echoed down the subterranean stairwell like a roll of distant thunder, followed immediately by the acrid smell of cordite and burning insulation.

"Moving in," Marcus barked into his comms unit, leading a four-man tactical squad down the winding, damp concrete stairs into the pitch-black abyss of the underground facility.

Vincent dropped in right behind them, his assault rifle raised, every muscle in his frame coiled like a striking viper. I followed closely in the secondary tier, my boots crunching on shattered glass and drywall debris, my right hand gripped tightly around the grip of the Glock while my left hand balanced the ruggedized terminal unit resting against my chest. The air grew progressively colder and heavier the deeper we descended into the belly of the limestone cavern, the constant, low-frequency hum of industrial generators vibrating through the soles of our boots.

Suddenly, the eerie silence of the subterranean corridor was shattered by the staccato roar of automatic gunfire echoing from the primary control room fifty yards ahead.

"Contact! Multiple targets at twelve o'clock!" Marcus yelled, diving behind a thick concrete support pillar as a hail of high-caliber rounds chewed chunks out of the wall inches above his head.

"Suppressing fire!" Vincent roared, stepping out into the open corridor and unleashing a controlled, devastating burst of return fire that instantly silenced the nearest muzzle flash down the hall.

Chaos erupted in the narrow limestone corridor. Tracer rounds lit up the darkness like crimson lightning, ricocheting off the damp stone walls with a deafening screech. I pressed my back hard against the concrete pillar beside Marcus, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird, but my hands remained steady as I flicked open my terminal and began running a brute-force penetration script against the local intranet.

"Marcus, their local loop is vulnerable!" I shouted over the thunderous concussions of flashbang grenades detonating down the corridor. "They’re routing the final upload through a localized relay box in the server room on our left. If I can sever the hardline before they hit enter, Protocol Zero dies right here!"

"Cover her!" Marcus bellowed to the two operatives flanking our rear, before turning his rifle toward the heavy steel doorway of the server room. "Sterling, we need to clear that room right now!"

Vincent didn't hesitate. Moving with terrifying, fluid speed, he tossed a stun grenade through the cracked doorway of the server room. A blinding flash of white light and a concussive boom shook the floorboards, followed instantly by the sound of two bodies collapsing heavily against the metal server racks inside.

"Clear!" Vincent’s voice rang out through the dissipating smoke. "Clara, get in here—now!"
